IIRC a bassplayer mag article said he had a pretty decent collection, including a T-Bird or two- which(again, IIRC)he plays.

I'd shoot a man dead in a bar for that bass.
Pull it off his corps right on stage.

I think we have a winner here! Here is the facebook account that photo was pasted to...

And Tom did play a T bird...I saw them live 2x back in that era and he had a T bird both times...after that it was always a 12 string.....

Although known primarily for 12-string basses, Tom has played Thunderbirds for many years. A few years ago he used a Precision when Cheap Trick played at the Calgary Stampede. Still sounded like Tom....

when i saw them in support of the budokan album way back when, i couldn't believe the 4-string tom was using...an ibanez musician. strange choice for a dude like him, but it sounded like him playing it. wasn't far off from the sound of his 12 string hamer, either...just with no upper octave. just goes to show you...the dude could probably get his sound out of anything.

As compared to Lady Gaga? How are you defining relevant?

Cheap Trick has influenced a lot of bands which followed in the power pop genre. Petersson came up with the idea of the 12-string bass and has a unique bass tone, IMO. That means something to a few people I suppose....

Bet the T-bird is much easier to record than the 12.

Hmmm, are you really sure it was an Ibanez? He used an 8-string Alembic quite a lot at that time (circa '78-'79) and also had a strange looking 4-string with a P-pickup and a neck-through construction. At the Reading gig in 1979 (as seen on youtube) he used a Thunderbird, Hamer 12 (the first acoustic look model), a some custom 8-string with Thunderbird pickups (see below) and a Fender Bass V.

The Alembic:

the strange 4 string pic didn't come out, and yes, it was long ago, but i'm pretty positive it was a musician. didn't have the alembic logo.

interesting...i just tried to find any pics of him using a musician and couldn't. or any references to him using one on the net. maybe it could have been the alembic 8-string, but i could swear it only had 4 strings. i wasn't too far away from him at that show and i'd like to think i could have spotted the alembic logo and the extra 4 keys.

Prove that you're relevant and then we'll worry about a band that has influenced a huge range of bands over the course of a 35 year career, selling millions of albums, millions of concert tickets and recording a dozen hits.
