Upcomming bassists that deserve attention

Sign in to disble this ad
Sometimes I go to a gig where there is a young bassist that really amazes me with his playing. Sometimes I hear a tune on myspace or on a new cd I have bought where the bassist sticks out with his cool chops or cool grooves. And sometimes it is a young talented bassist nobody has heard off... untill now!

This is a call to share as much info as possible about the upcoming young bassist you think deserves some extra attention.
Let me put a guideline who to post here:
- It has to be someone that is pretty new in the industry, maybe recorded a couple of cd’s or just been touring with a band for a while but not yet at the point where he can earn a good living with playing.
- Someone you think will break trough in the next 5 years as an influential player.
- Someone that really inspired you
- Someone that deserve way more attention than he got op to this point.

Please do not post your favourite bass player most of us know already. (Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Flea, Anthony Jackson, Jaco Pastorius to name a few). These are the bassist that have been extensively studied and listened to by most of us (and there is a reason for this).

He has done lot's of stuff. His 6 and 7 string fretless bass tunes are amazing compositions. Definately deserves more attention:

This guy is amazing!!! His name is Brian Buracker. He is a good friend of mine and I am in such awe of his ability and skill. This guy just put his mind to doing this project and turned out a great album. Not only did he write the music for it, he taught himself how to sing within two years or so and he plays bass. Listen to his stuff and tell me what you think.

Peace,
Chris

Johnny Christ. Only been around since 2002-2003. Great bassist who i think is severely overlooked. Probably becuase he's in a metal band.

Nate McBride

Full disclosure: Nate works with a lot of musicians I used to work with, & we've played on a few dual bass projects in the past. I consider him a close aquaintance, if not a downright friend. He's mostly known as an upright player.

*BUT*

When I heard his electric bass playing with Joe Morris' Racket Club, he blew my mind. Funky as an Old Skool badass, but with the linear dialog of an Ornette alumnus.

Just watched his Youtube vids.
Never heard of him before. Not many guys have such a command of different techniques (finger playing, tapping, slapping, fretless intonation) and also have good compositional skills.

Thanks for sharing.

She up and came already...

...but having been on the road and for many years now with both of guitarist Jim Thomas' Experiences, The Mermen and currently The Shitones, Jennifer Burnes, has some serious groove and out-thereness to her playing. Having seen The Mermen play numerous times, she always makes the shows fun as they never play the same songs the same way, always solid, jamming, evolving, and experimenting, without any misscues of notice in an improv environment.

Their new CD is about to hit the racks - www.mermen.net However, their original bass player, Allen Whitman, is now back in the fold, and certainly doing his job well.
