Buy Jaco's debut-album, you'll find it there.

I think I'd have to be more into his playing to buy the album, but if I can find it used I'll surely pick it up.

Amazed

I'm amazed someone would play the bass and not own a Jaco Pastorius record/CD. ............ Truly amazed.

PS: You don't play or copy Jaco's bass solos you gaze thru the window of limitless possibilities.

Eh...? So by avoiding Jaco you have more possibilities...? Makes no sense to me!

That's not what I said. ...... Most players copy other bass players concepts, (bass lines and solos). Some know what notes they're playing and for what reason, unfortunately most don't, they just want to see their fingers fly up and down the neck(that's OK). Jaco's solos and basslines show the ultimate possibilities of rhythm and note selection. So, by all means go ahead and learn Jaco's lines but for the greatest lasting effect from doing that is to learn why he played what he did. And once you do then you "open the window of limitless possibilities."

I don't think that's true, if you'll pardon my ignorance.
Jaco showed us what could be done with the bass guitar, but he was still working within his own parameters. So yeah, in 1976 "Jaco's solos and basslines [showed] the ultimate possibilities [in] rhythm and note selection." I'll buy that, but the idea that the concept of the electric bass guitar hasn't gone anywhere since the guy died doesn't hold water with me. Great Bassist. Innovative Bassist. Dead Bassist. Did the bass die with him?

"did the Bass died with him?"
........... Who said that?
The bass and bassists are stronger than ever because of him not the other way around. The instrument has traveled light years because of him...... There was bass before Jaco and after and they're completely different. .... Just like all the innovators on all the instruments. Bird/Hendrix/Miles/Jaco, etc, etc. .... Jaco stopped innovating long before he died. But so did Bird more a life style choice. I was taking about understanding what you play the second your playing it and Jaco did, which is incredible to comprehend. Building a bass line or solo note for note phrase for phrase so it stands alone. ..... also I was saying that some guys play Jaco solo's, which is where this post started, and don't understand the relationship between the notes they are playing. As if being an American Idol is better than being a good singer. ..........

I just covered this tune on my friend (percussionist) Steve Kroon's up-coming CD. This transcription, note wise is good, but the tune is a 20 bar tune (in cut time) w/ the 12th bar being a 3/4 bar.

Amazed is and understatement, Talk bass could certainly do with a screening and a hierarchy to keep things humming a long more like a music dept, how do beginners get into a conversation about Jaco and with such a crap attitude..

pick up a used copy... like your doing the record a favor by owning it...sad and hilarious at the same time

I think that you can never really know exactly why a soloist played each and every note they played when they played it, you can only interpret the notes within their harmonic and rhythmic context. I mean, you can get really into what other factors were influencing them at the time, but unless you know a person, you'll never really know why they played a note.
