That "back-up" bass-player is nasty too!! I was about to turn off the last clip, until I heard him slap the hell out of that thing (~9:00 in)...holy crap |

I've seen a LOT of bassists and most have a complete command of their instruments but this cat is just on a 'whole 'nutha level'!! |

While he is the master of all kinds of crazy typewriter-sounding techniques, don't forget to always listen to how exceptionally musical Victor Wooten is.

Don't get me wrong - Victor has amazing technical abilities. His fingers move incredibly fast and he plays a bunch of complicated riffs. But for some reason his music, and music similar to his, just doesn't move me. I don't know why. I guess I'm more partial to hearing bass played like...well, bass. I'd much rather listen to James Jamerson, John Paul Jones, Paul McCartney, etc.
But I guess I'm in the minority.

The solo bass style I like, that Vic also excels at, is the " Sonata in G minor" stuff.
In fact, when I see Vic today, I'm goign to ask him when he's doing a Christmas album, sicne that syle of solo bass would work exceptionally well for Christmas carols, imho.
Vic bass tech is Anthony Wellington. He gives slap lessons onliner at www.musicdojo.com, as well as teaching in VA when he's not touring. Dude's the best.

But I guess I'm in the minority. | There's nothing wrong with not liking this kind of thing. Plus, you get the luxury of getting to hear the kind of bass players you like 24/7 on the radio, every covers band and most bars
I personally am a big fan of his music/ideas (naturally not to listen to ALL the time) and find the melodic aspect extremely inspiring and the technical aspect totally entertaining which is missing in a lot of popular music and shows of today.
Is the same concept as people not liking specialist, technical guitarists like Vai/Satriani etc. These people probably also don't like all those fast/complicated notes in classical music either, but what's forgotten is you rarely hear it if you're not a particular fan or searching for it. Plus. you don't HAVE to like it as it's a specialist market to some extent.
The main thing is it's great to have diversity in music instead of hearing the obvious recycled ideas, no matter how extreme the music type is. Still, I love to hear some good ole Motown, classic tunes and chart music in between of course............that's why it's known as Pop(ular) music |

It was too self-indulgent and he didn't play any of his recognizable songs (such as from his first few solo albums)--it was all noodly fusion jams. That being said, he was still phenomenal in his abilities, just not as entertaining as when I saw him last year.
And his drummer is one of the best I've ever seen, up there with Antonio Sanchez. His chops were beyond belief but he was also so musical in his use of dynamics and space.
