There's not really much on this guy, that i can find, mostly because of the language-thing i think.

The guys name is Masaki.

In a few months, Google will implement a feature that makes and translates closed captions on videos, can't wait for that feature.

Just a video of him play a lot of different styles.

This is probably his best **** (that i've hear so far). The dude is on at least 20 albums.

So, what do yall think, Victor is knocked off the top? For discussions sake, lets just say he's on top

This guy is definitely good at what he does, but I didn't really hear anything special. I didn't hear anything Billy Sheehan hasn't been doing for 20 yrs. Certainly nowhere near Vic Wooten caliber, and, to my ears, not terribly musical either. Fast, yes. Technical, sure. Not amazing at anything in particular though.

I think this guy has a long way to go until he touches Wooten. I also don't hear anything inspiring in his playing...just lots of notes.

Uh, no. Not even close. He's good, but this Masaki dude is not Wooten.

If Vic saw this thread, he would wish the guy well and call him the better bassist.

That, IMO, makes him a better bassist in itself.

+1. The essence of Wooten.

What's with his tone in that live solo

"There is only one Victor Wooten, and I have that job." V. Wooten

When chatting with Victor one of my friends stated that he could never hold a candle to Victor. He was affraid to play his bass while Victor was watching. Essentially Victor was saying that everyone has their own style and only they can do it the way that they do. Accept what is and the rest takes care of itself.

In my opinion that is very Zen. I can play like me. I put my own flavor into things and I am able to groove in a nice pocket and that is all there is on that.

I guess that my point is there is no 1st tier, 2nd tier, etc. on playing anything. If you do what you do and it works then that is enough. The rest is arrogance, IMHO.

Sheehan's been going there and back for 25+ years. Nothing new, nothing special. Definitely nothing even coming close to touching Vic.

That guy is more of a wanker than most of the guitards I know.
Yes he has incredible speed, but it was boring.

This is laughable! You can't possibly think that hairball is even on the same planet with a guy like Victor!

He's not even close to what Victor Wooten can play. yes it is particularly fast, but it just doesn't have the soul that Victor Wooten puts into his music. Once again, it is fast, but not very musically informed.

IMHO, horrible tone. Fast playing doesn't make you great at anything, just means you can play stuff fast. Technically he is legit, but he's very sloppy. IMO a great bassist is someone who knows when to attack and when to release. How to be in the pocket and really IN THERE. When to shine and when to be one of the band. I don't believe this guy is into any of that except when to shine from watching his videos. I take Victor all day long.

Ah. I'm mistaken. I thought it was universally accepted that Victor wasn't anything special, other then a very good technical player.

So, clearly, that's where i had hoped this would discussion would gravitate towards.

Vic is most definitely a very special musician and much much more than just a technical player.

I totally agree. Id bet that half of the members on this forum are better than that dude. Playing garbage fast means that youre still playing garbage. Dont get me wrong, the guy has tech skills but no soul, no pocket, no tone, no heart. It reminds me of the type of sterile bassline youd hear from a keyboard in an anime cartoon.
