Victor Wooten - Speed Bass Guitar Battle

I imagine some/most of you have seen this video before. Wow! This guy makes me feel bad about my abilities - like I’m standing still, and embarrassed to say I play bass!

Meh.

No practical use for that.

Pure wanking for wanking sake.

I want to hear him groove without any frilly playing in a 1-4-5 blues band, that would impress me more.

I thinks it's pretty impressive regardless of it's practical use. I know he can play well in a more typical way so I'm happy for him to "show off" like that (although Vic is probably too nice to show off in a mean way).

I know the dude is a good guy. It's like going to Guitar Wank Fest '08 at Guitar Center.

It gets old, quick.

Great Showmanship, really shows how Victor & Reggie really do play the same.

Victor is amazing performer. I wish somehow he would focus on doing a landmark recording or try to really to focus his talent on songs verses showmanship that take advantage of his style. When I mean song, I dont mean just grooving or playing fundamental bass either, but something along the lines of RTF or what Zappa did.

I have been so disappointed with his own recorded work vs his live shows. I bet Frank could have done some amazing music with Victor's talent, like he did with Bozzio & Steve Vai.

He can. When he's sitting back grooving he's as good at that as anybody I've heard.

Check out his new album Palmystery. I had some feelings similar to yours (to some extent) before he released it. It's got some really impressive stuff on it. Of course it has some dud tracks, in my opinion, but musically it's a major departure from his past albums.

Listen to "Big Country" by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Some tasty, restrained, fretless playing by Vic.

If you like Victor Wooten you can have him as your example, try to groove like he does, or build bass lines like he does... but those other tricks, it's going to take a long time for you to pull them off and, like Victor himself says, they will get you fired from any gig! He should put a disclaimer on his videos, something along the lines of "do not try this at a gig..."

Yes, Victor is indeed the man. And for those who have never bothered to check out his groove playing before putting him down, shame on you. One of the greatest groovers ever!

Thanks, downloading it now. Skimming through it, it seems like your right, a Wooten effort with real substance (other than Bella). I look forward to listening further. It's crazy but the song "Us- 2" I swear sounds like Jeff Beck as a bassist- really amazing piece.

I have never heard anybody play like THAT at Guitar Center!!!!!
I did see Victor play with Mike Stern at the Iridium with Dave Weckl on drums, he grooved and kept his role throughout the gig, at the end he was able to do his thing, but it was refreshing to see him as a regular member of a band.

About gettting fired from a band..........

I got kicked out for playing melodic lines in a acoustic band. The guitarist only played chords and sang. The whole band sucked.

Yeah, well then there's old Black Sabbath and blues wankers like me, so DONT " FRET" !

Hey, you need to see Vic in person one day- reason being is, once you see the guy, and watch him do what do does better than anyone, then its like a bullet hits you in the head - He's only a human, just like you, and just like me. If he can do it, so can YOU!

Of course, for an old acid rock/blues wanker like me, it takes A LONG TIME to get near those chops, but HEY, you have to have a goal! Else you'll be revvin' your engine with the tranny in neutral.

Now, in comment to the " contra utilitarian" wankfest on you boob, hey, those cats are having fun, thats all! Folks pay to see Vic, and they expect him to WANK HARD! Capische!?

BUT, and its a BIGASS BUTTT, reading Vic's " The Music Lesson" and focusing on the pulse of the tune has made me ( by others opinions never my own ) one of the tightest bassists around. One local player , after seeing the band, ( straight up rock and roll kids, no soul and no funk ), called the drummer and I " One big time machine! "

Yeah bro, fa sure. and THNX Victa!

Dont judge a cat by some youboob clip. That dude can groove like no tomorrow. But tis not what folks pay him to do, now is it? ( rhetorical Q, of course it isnt)

I dont do jealous anymore, but think of that, how bloody cool !
