Visit to Jaco's park & grave

Sign in to disble this ad
Due to circumstances out of my control I've had to relocate back to South Florida for a while. One of the to-do things on my list was to check out the new Jaco park and also visit his grave site. The park has been built since I was here last and for some reason I never went to pay my respects at his final resting place. I had some business to take care of yesterday and visited both on my way home.

The park is very nice and the murals are spectacular it's great tribute. Kudos to the artist I know there was some controversy at one time about it but it's well done and a captures his likeness well. It was a cold & windy day so no one was using the park!

Also I went out to the cemetery he was laid to rest at for the first time. Funny I had driven by it countless times before but didn't realize it was the one he was in. It's a simple grave site, nothing out of the ordinary and nothing signifying the great musical talent that is buried there. It was a humbling experience to finally visit him. I grew up down here and had heard many Jaco stories from fellow musicians but I never met him myself. I had a silent moment, thanked him for all the great music and hoped he is at peace somewhere. I took some pics and wanted to share.

May you rest in peace, Jaco, and I hope I get to see you getting down with your jazz in Heaven's band when I go to see my Savior.

I was lucky enough to hear him on three occasions, with Weather Report, Joni Mitchell and the PBD (Pastorius, Bullock and Dennard) Band. While Jaco deserves the memorial to him, I prefer to remember him through those performances.

Cool I grew up in Delray and I'm in Boynton now. Odd to be back after being away for a few years. A lot has changed!

Anyway the park is in Oakland Park. Take I-95 to Oakland Park Blvd, head east to Dixie, turn left heading north and the park is about a mile up right when the road curves to the left it's on the right you can't miss it. The grave is a bit harder to find it's out west on 441 north of Commercial Blvd.

Nice post. Made me really miss Jaco and his music. A tragic loss due to drugs, alcohol and mental illness. Speaking of which, I'm very committed to roadrecovery.org
Aguilar is doing matching donations up to $60,000. This is the kind of organization that helps keep young musicians from self-destruction.

I don't have the link handy (maybe someone can find it) but I remember either the family or the committee that handled the park's construction not being happy with the original mural and painted over it. I could be wrong though just rings a bell.
