Agree with the 'there is no best' comments, but I will give the guy this...

I am not even a Rush fan but have tremendous respect for those guys. There aren't too many players out there who can sing and play when the melodies and bassline don't match up. Throw in those odd time signatures while singing & playing, and he certainly ranks up there at the top.

Dont forget the keyboards too.

I saw Rush for the first time wednesday night, and i was blown away by all of them. I literally started to cry.

To me he is. But I'm sure there are plenty of guys that are more technically profficeint than Geddy. But for all he does yes, and I'm a huge Rush fan. So naturally my opinion is skewed.

I'd say that no ROCK bassist has his ability or technical knowledge/experience. The fact that he's 60 and plays like a 25 year old that has used every hour to hone his ability speaks for itself. He is just that good. Watch Rush in person ONCE, and you get it.

Hes by far my favorite bass player bar none, but there are better "technicians". Then again, I couldnt name any one of those "technique-guys" songs or watch them play for more than a few seconds so i guess that says it all.

I judge a musicians quality by the music they make, not their technique, and in my mind geddy lee is very mediocre.

Fair enough but, who in your opinion, makes quality music?

I believe that Geddy is one of the top rock bass players. He was the one who inspired me to begin playing the bass.

However, I do not remember Geddy's exact words, but he stated that he thought Jeff Berlin was one of the best bassist's in the industry. I know that Geddy and Jeff are friends and that Jeff even dedicated one of his songs to Rush (I believe it was All the Greats). Also, Geddy is an adjunct teacher at Jeff's school.

Anyway, Geddy has my vote.

I'm a huge Geddy fan and I think that his playing fits Rush's music perfectly, of course, I can't imagine it any other way.

I just try and listen to the players in the context of the music that is being made so I can't really compare one player to another.

It's like when Guitar Player wanted award Carlos Santana an award, he promptly said that music is not a competition.
