Want to hear a great example of Rickenbacker "Clank?"

'ROUNDABOUT' from the DVD 'YES - UNION LIVE' - YouTube
Yes, live in 1991 "Roudabout"

Guitarist Magazine has described the sound of a Rickenbacker 4001 like "An overloaded ship running aground in the gravel"

I'd say that Squire's tone, and on that song in particular, sounds like a concrete mixer.
Cementblandaren - YouTube

Regardless, that's a killer version of that song and a stellar showcase of what "Clank" is all about.

Interesting....although the 'clank' seems to be more based on attack and positioning near the bridge in some sections. When he plays closer to the neck, the tone is deep, rich and quite beautiful. Thanks for the post...

It sits in the mix..

I am not familiar with this band, but I did notice that one drummer is wearing a Gi, the other a black singlet, Gat a white singlet, the singer some kind of white silk or rayon shirt with gold tassels. Keys guy dons a white T that says HARD. And the acoustic gat has some kind of tie dye, and all have mullets..***...is this band some kind of piss take?

Oh, I didn't know I posted a clip of a fashion pageant, let me check it again... Nope it's the right link showing one of the most legendary Prog rock bands of all time.

Oh and for your information, in 1991 the Mullet was still a common hairstyle.

Classic! Bruce Foxton of the Jam had a pretty distinctive Rickenbacker sound too.

Oh, boy. The vocals don't sound very good in that video... but the bass sure does!

Dear god. You just watched one of the most amazing drummers alive, Bill Bruford, and you're rambling about his clothes!

I was in the house for this show, because that was filmed in Denver. They played And You and I, I think they played Siberian Khatru -- it was a friggin' amazing concert and when they played the "Classic Yes" songs, it was the "Classic Yes" lineup. Staggering musicianship from all five performers. Also, they played Long Distance Runaround, which was just the bomb.

And now, probably will never happen again. Wakeman is retired from touring for health reasons. So is Anderson. I did go see the half-yes band that is touring recently (like 2008, I believe) and I got to see Close To The Edge live, but sans Wakeman and Anderson.

Anyway, yes the bass tone was awesome at that show. I also saw them on Big Generator, and sometime in the mid-1990's. They consistently put on a massive show.

Not only the one of the most amazing drummer, but one of the most amazing bands. This band as Rick Wakeman himself said:"Yes is like a buss full of talented musicians. There are buss stops along the road and some goes off some goes on. But, Yes always had the right lineup at the right time."

I think the current Yes lineup is superb as usual. One thing is obvious. Squire is the only member on all yes albums.
Regarding the Rickenbacker clank, I've all the Yes live DVD's. And the Yes Reunion show is not recorded as well as some others. If you want great sound watch the live at The House Of Blues. You will see that Squire's tone contain a clank, but it is full as well. An other thing is that Chris gets this clunky tone on every bass he plays, p-bass, Jazz etc. it is due to his picking technuiqe. He use a Herco Flex 75 pick which he holds in such a way that it is hardly sticks out in front of his thumb and index finger.

You forgot another important part of Chris Squire's tone: his amps.

He gets that concrete mixer sound going by using Guitar heads like the Vox AC100 or the Fender Dual Showman, Sunn and has been using Marshall Guitar heads for the longest time. He alsos uses Marshall 4x12 guitar cabs and Ampeg 8X10 bass cabs in a woofer-tweeter set up and uses fuzz boxes and treble boosters to further enhance the twang he gets.

I addition, I found out something interesting, he uses the neck pickup of his Rick only, the bridge pickup is not even connected.
Read more about that here

Here's an interview with him on his sound and set up.

Right about the various guitar heads he used. He used AC30 as well during The Syn years.
But he use both pups, bridge pup into (today) a Marshall Super Bass head and 4x12 guitar cab. Neck pup goes into 2x SVT2pro and 2x Ampeg 8x10 Cab. In addition he use a SWR head with 2x15 cabs for his bass pedals.
Most of his tone is in his pick/ hand and just amp overdrive. But he uses the fuzz when it's needed.

I'll ask Miguel Falcao on this pickup issue, as he is Chris's nr.1 fan.... And he do amazing covers of Chris.

Ric clank is but one of a million things that clip is a stellar showcase of.

I'm definitely a bigger fan of the more "classic" Yes lineups, but I saw them on this tour (the show I saw in Philly was in the round, also very cool) and the talent level on that stage was simply mind boggling. I went to see them simply because it was Yes, but I was a little skeptical because the album "Union" didn't wow me. however, that concert most definitely DID wow me and twenty years later I'd still say it was one of the best I've ever seen.
