There's a live stream of The Roots & John Legend performing right now, 9/23/10 @ 9:00pm. I don't know who the bassist is, but this guy is holding it down! Check it out if you're looking for something cool to watch. It's dope, I promise.

Here's a link:

...(the song that prompted me to write this just ended, but I'm sure there's more bad-assness to come.)

If anyone tunes in and can ID the bass he's using I'd be interested to know what it is (or who he is). They show him every few minutes just long enough to see catch a glimpse of the bass. Big ups!

The backup band for this is The Roots, so that would be Owen Biddle. An article from Bassplayer mag says he uses:

GEAR
Basses CallowHill The J(unk) 6-string, CallowHill OBS-6 with 30” scale, Burns Marquee BassStrings DR Hi-Beams (Thomastik flatwounds on the Burns)
Amps Ampeg B600R combo, “One onstage and one in the band room at Late Night”; Rented SVT rigs live with the Roots, with Sensaphonic in-ears
Pedalboard MI Audio Crunch Box, Electro- Harmonix Bass MicroSynth, Electro- Harmonix Holy Grail Plus reverb, Sans Amp Programmable Bass DI, Boss TU-2 tuner

Cool, thanks. I'm gonna find as much of his music as I can for sure. He really covers the entire spectrum of bass playing (style-wise) and does a damn fine job. I'm surprised I haven't heard of him before.

Bassplayerbob is probably right, but I thought I saw the Carvin logo on the top of the bass, either way its groovin!

Right. Owen Biddle. Callowhill MDM6, short-scale.

Tim Cloonan was going for a Burns Bison look with the colorscheme / pickguard.

Biddle's been playing that bass every night for the last year on the Jimmy Fallon show.
