Were older bass players made better?

You know how everything was made better back then. Are older bass players made better than the newer ones? In putting together a band should you seek out older bass players and pay a premium for them? Especially, if they've been reliced?

I consider myself an older bass player, 43 this week, it's not a bad thing.
At church our praise and worship musicians are all mostly mid 20's...except the bass players. We have 5 bass guys that rotate week to week and we are all over 40, I think I'm the youngest. Something about wanting the solid low end to be mature???..I don't feel 43, I just look it and groan alot (old man noises).

I thought the '57s were much sturdier...

I am partial to the '56 model. Some of the younger ones just need more time. They will get there. You just have to give them more time than the older ones.

25% of all people play music in their 20s. If someone is still playing in his 40s or above, he is a dedicated and probably very proficient musician.

(Not that I'm that old or anything. )

The '56 model is generally agreed upon as the peak.

I agree about the '56 model being the best. Better teeth, hair, bones and other materials were being used back then.

If I played for 15 years, but then kinda took off 10 years, and then started again recently, would I still qualify as "vintage"?

Some of us old guys might have a neck problem ... we might be more passive than active ... we may not take well to being slapped ... But we have mojo ...

Absolutely, but I believe the '57 models have the most Mojo!

76' vintage here (started playing that year). Not pre-CBS but still pretty solid. I saw Jaco with Weather Report that year, too.

I predate Leo's earliest bass creation but I still work okay. Sometimes things need to be tightened a little more and moved a little less, but that's the way it goes.

I'm 61 and I play better now than I ever have played. With music, there more you learn, the more there is to learn. I'm just grateful that I've found a few fortysomethings who are happy to have me play with them!

I don't know, the '86 models are pretty versatile. Good for modding, too!
