Jaco and Stanley fall into the idol category for me

they might not be my favorites all the time, but they'll always be the ones that paved the way.

maybe this comes a bit like a shock to you guys, but i don't really listen to bassists. of course when the bassist does something cool i'll notice it. but i'm not really a fan of this whole bass solo idea. just to clarify, i do know who jaco and stanley are, i actually own a couple of their albums, but hardly listen to them. jaco is cool though cos he can also write nice songs and portait of tracey is just a beautyfull piece of music. he is the only bass virtuoso that i listen to and really like.
i'd much rather listen to a pink floyd album, even though the basslines are mostly quite simple, but the songs are amazing.
so with this logic, my bass gods are roger waters; walter becker, sting, john paul jones, flea and michael porcaro. oh i forgot, i think stuart hamm is cool. there was this vid floating around here of him playing a solo during a satriani show. the intro and the moonshine sonata are really impressive, very nice and tasty playing. do i idolize him though? hm; no.

Although I like soloists and shredders, I don't want to be like them. I try to be more like the Pinos, Zenders, Hope-Taylors, Levys, etc. of the world.

Oh my gods...

How about Joe Osborn, Tommy Coggbill and Jerry Jemmott? Those guys could hang with any session. And don't forget Carol Kaye for the fairer sex. She did just a few critical tracks (Pet Sounds, etc) Also, someone already mentioned Willie Weeks and I have to agree.
