What bass was used for "Plastic Fantastic Lover"?

This morning I responded to a thread about the 3 greatest bass tones ever. I said that #1 was Jack Casady, and I do believe that.

my question is: do you know what bass he used on the song "Plastic Fantastic Lover", on the album "Surrealistic Pillow". was it a Gibson EB2 hollow body?

I don't think that Alembic had been started yet, but I could be wrong.

anyway, anybody who knows, I would deeply appreciate the answer.

/s/ Dave

He used his Jazz bass (modified with added P-bass pickup) on all of Surrealistic Pillow.

+1 on the jazz. After that he switched to a modified Guild Starfire semi-hollow. Never used a Gibson on any Jefferson Airplane recordings.

Have you listened to the live album "Bless It's Pointed Little Head" ??? He OWNS that record with tone to die for!!! I'd dearly love to be able to hear those bass tracks soloed.

thanks everyone who responded:

i tell my son, if you can sound like jack casady, you're halfway to being great. he has a jack casady signature by epiphone.

Jack casady: greatest sound ever played and by a damn good player!

You are not just a-woofin' there. Ye gods, Jack COMMANDS everything and everyone on that record, instrumentally speaking. AFAIK, the bass he was using on that was the Alembicized Guild Starfire.

Thanx for starting the thread. My first concert was May 1968. I was 12. Saw Jefferson Airplane at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. 2 Fender Showmans, 2 Sunn 200S cabinets. Sunburst Fender Precision. La Bella Flats. Jack is a stud and one of my main influences. Yep, for me it's 3 Showmans later and several 200S cabinets. He also had a stock Pbass, no mods. The movie "Woodstock", the directors cut has extra footage of Jefferson Airplane. Yep, his tone is to "die for". He also used Epiphone Rivoli basses i do believe. Nice to know Jack has not been forgoten in this era of tiny boutique amps and neo speakers and all kinda modern contraptions...we seem to have forgotten the simple pleasure of a great bass into a great amp and cabinet.
Rock on Bassbro's
Peace and happiness to all.

No, those were Guild Starfires. Never used Rivolis.
