Sup peeps! Everybody has that sound that they love, so influenced you to chase that sound, and what gear did you have to use to get it?

Seriously now, I have always loved Ryan Martinies sound, but I never shaped mine so I could sound like him, although it gave me cues to get the tone I wanted. Somebody once said my bass sound was very similar to the bassist from In Flames, but since I rarely listen to them, I haven't really got anything to go by...
Pretty much all my basses are or have been warwick (German or rockbass), used to use a Warwick rig but now use GK700RBII head unit through an Ampeg V4B 215 folded horn cab.
Cheers,
Jordan

I'm sort of an amalgamation of the various bassists (and other instrumentalists for that matter) and my own techniques and ideas of phrasing. But I would say that my bass of choice (Warwick) and amp of choice (SWR) were heavily influenced by the first bassist I came to admire, P-Nut of the band 311. I was drawn to the independent grooves he played opposite the drums and guitars that still seemed to lock in just right. Also I just loved the tone he had on their albums and on their live stuff, most notably that famous Warwick "growl".

Besides that, I'm not really sure that I sound like anyone in particular. There are lots of bass players that I like and get influenced by, so I'm probably more of a hybrid of a few sounds, I guess?

But I digress.

But no one really tell me I sound like anyone, probably because I hit my bass more than I play it . But as far as influences from bassists it Hugh Hopper (R.I.P.) of Soft Machine. Guitarists it's Robert Fripp (King Crimson of course), Steve Howe of Yes, Allan Holdsworth, and other such people who play music.

Very chainsaw-ish. But my ears may just be playing tricks on me. I got it by using my VT bass with the mids and drive cranked and a bit of a bass cut. |

| | | | I guess I sound like an amalgamation of all those wonderful players who I have been influenced by.
geddy, chris squire, etc.
In fact, I find as I get older that I like more straight forward playing and use less and less embellishment in my playing. I like Nick Seymour, Sebastian Steinberg, Edmonndo Ammendola etc for that relaxed, pocket style of playing.
When I was younger, I played the bass mean - lots of tricks and whistles. Now I play a lot more calmly, wanting it to suit the band and the song more than suit my ego. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
