- general cross section of solid rock bassists. I don't go for that 7-string solo every other measure prima donna white man funk crap.

I'm going into a (good) regression as of late due to lots of press on guys like Jamerson, Brown, Marshall "Rock" Jones, Robert "Kool" Bell, etc.

Kim Deal (The Pixies)
Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, others)
Andy Rourke (The Smiths)
Charles Mingus (The Man!)
Mike Watt (The Legend!)

And Lately I've been listening to Mike Ibold (Pavement) He's done some good work, especially on Brighton the Corners.

Jah Wobble is really cool as well. Very deep, stands out, but supports the song as well.

I guess I find chops masters boring. Jimmy Haslip can play his ass off, but the music itself is dull.

Now more seriously:
there's a talkbasser who recently started a thread about Verdine White:he noticed that Verdine is underrated among other talkbassers.
Well,I JUST FEEL THE SAME ABOUT MARCUS!!!
What do you think?
Is this mostly a teen-ager forum, where people prefere more popular bassists as Les Claypool,Flea,Fieldy,P-Nut,etc....???
I mean:I don't wanna be offensive with noone here, neither derespectfull with enormous bassists as Flea!!!!But I'm only wondering if american-average bassplayer is influenced by popularity as a factor of his choices and tastes.
Anyway,I feel Marcus is underrated here. That's a fact.

Talking Oh-No A Guitar Player!?!?!?

My biggest influence would have to be Zakk Wylde. Little known fact for ya; he plays bass too. But it is his attitude more than anything. It's all about the music. That's what I'm in it for. The Music!

When I was 8 years old, I heard Zeppelin II. I wanted to play the bass after that. (John Paul Jones)

When I was 9, I heard Iron Maiden. I wanted to play the bass even more. (Steve Harris)

When I was 10, I heard Rush. I knew then that I wanted to play the bass really well. (Geddy Lee)

I lived for Prog after that. Chris Squire, Greg Lake, Tony Levin..

As I got older, I heard the likes of Sting, Bruce Foxton, Watt, Graham Mabys, Andy Rourke, Tommy Stinson, and I learned the true beauty of simplicity and how to properly carry a tune with some meaningful yet simple low end. Nowadays, I find myself digging Jaco, Hellborg, Berlin, Sheehan and all the rest of the virtuosos and I think back to when I though Sting was the greatest I ever heard.

My latest inspiration is.. Charles Mingus.. Thanks for reading!
