Hello. I used Labella Flat Wounds which were marketed by Fender before Fender had their own bass string line. I bass player friend of mine named Marty found 20 brand new, unused sets in 1974 and sold 3 sets to me. I used two sets on all my recording work and once a year would boil them. I think Labella's "Deep Bass" is supposed to be the equivalent but I haven't had the need to buy them. I heard these were the same strings Jamerson had before his bass was stolen.
Later.

on early Dire Straits stuff John Illsley used a precision, and he mentioned Dean Markley flatwounds in a later interview when he played a Jazz (in the 90's)- but it sounds like flats throughout.

also the Average White Band's Alan Gorrie.

+1. On my main P, I switch to rounds every few months, but the flats end up back on before I wear out the rounds. Chromes here.

I'm using flats on my Rickenbacker 4001 and my Warwick LTD edition. I would have laughed at myself for doing it only a few years ago - but I love the feel and the additional low end punch. Say what you will - flatwounds work for me

That's probably a shorter list.

I DO!!!

The "new" Fender 9050CL set in 45-60-80-105. They are steel instead of chrome, so they growl when you want them to, are mellow when you need them to be, consistent both from string-to-string and up the neck, economical, last "foreve,r" balanced in tension and tone, and the best flats I've ever played.

These are the flats that converted me from rounds after playing bass for 35+ years. I used them on my custom P-style fanned fret bass. They do the "chromes" things without thudding out over time, and they do the "rounds" things without twang, but with all the growl you want.

I've had my set on for two years now, and they just keep getting better and better.

A Different Custom P-style Bass

Everybody needs to try this set at least once. Now, I know that with different playing styles and such that they may not be for everybody, but these are the next generation of flats that are the most underrated strings out there.

Taking off my Chromes this week to try these, in part thanks to your enthusiastic review. Thought I was playing Chromes for life, but ended up seeking better G/D balance and a bigger E. Until D'Adarrio makes a "CL" set like Fender (45-105), something tells me me and these 9050s are going to get along. BTW - registered at BassStringsOnline.com and got a deal... Jason is the man!

OMG - just strung this set up on my P. They are everything you said they would be and more! They sound more scooped in the mids than Chromes, but the lows are so buttery, I'm over it. The tension is amazing too. They are springer than Chromes, but tense enough to keep my action low. Right now they sound round-ish, but it a good way. I bet they'll sound even better once they settle in. Thanks so much for the tip!!!

Huh, Fender CLs sound interesting.
Has anyone ever tried the 5 string set with the taper-wound low B?

I believe Leeland Sklar uses Chromes. I have a set right now [40-95] and they sound fine but not as good as the LaBella Deep Talkin' Bass [FL760] that were on there. D'Addario's quality control is a bit wonky IMO. The D & E-strings get a bit gnarling down by the bridge. I plan on getting some TI Flats in the near future. Hopefully that will be the end of my string search. If not, I'll try those Fenders and, if that doesn't work out, I'll try some pressure wounds . . .

I would think (I'm not sure though) that John Deacon used them.

Thanks to TB I have recently given flats another shot and have to say I'm enjoying them on my P-Bass Special. I don't use them across the board but for that bass I'm liking them so far.

Again I'll mention Steve Harris as he was the guy that during the era of guitar shred, convinced me to set my guitar down from time to time and play the bass.
