I actually think she's a better instrumentalist than she is a singer/songwriter.

I mean, the songs are competent daytime radio filler, but there's nothing about it that's deserving of superstar status.

I know on "The Globe Sessions" she played bass on all but 1 or 2 songs.

Her technique is poor, but I like her playing. It fits the music, and sounds good to me. This will probably be a contoversial statement, but here goes anyway: As far as I'm concerned, the technique doesn't matter as long as it sounds good. Music is sound, and all that is really important is that it sounds good. Obviously, if you want to play Rush or Yes or any challenging music you better have good technique, but her music is simple and doesn't require great chops on bass. And simple music can be great, too. If you listen to a song and like the bass line, does it really matter how many fingers were used to play it?

IMO a lot of the people criticizing her (not all, of course) are doing it out of ego and jealosy. It makes them feel good about themselves to think that they are superior to a famous musician. Sheryl Crow is a talented musician/songwriter/singer that plays many instruments and is thoroughly knowledgable about music theory, and her music makes millions of people happy. That is enough for me. I respect her, and like her music AND her bass playing.
