What happened to Meshell Ndegeochello?

I just bought her latest CD "Devil's Halo" expecting that soulful, greasy funk that I remember. Wow, this soft pop rock disc with no stand out bass was a total letdown! If you did'nt read the credits , you wouldn't know it was her. What happened???

I guess you didn't hear "The World Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams" (or "Comfort Woman" or "Bitter" - or "Jamia: Dance Of The Infidel" for that matter)! Part of what makes Me'shell Me'shell is her ever-changing musical tendencies. Her approach seems to be: go with the flow (the "flow" being whatever music is filling her head at a given time). She doesn't just stick with one "vibe". This can make it hard for some fans to maintain an interest in her and is probably one of the reasons her last few recordings were issued on smaller labels (not that Maverick was huge, but it did have very good distribution from what I understand). While I'm not a huge fan of her more pop/rock-oriented stuff, I do respect her musical integrity. I will admit, however, that my favourite Me'shell moments are from her first two albums (though I also love a lot of what's on "Comfort Woman" and "Cookie"). I adore her bass playing (she's one of my biggest influences) and it would be nice to hear more of what I feel is her unique voice on the instrument.

Artists change, and I have come to accept that MeShell no longer makes music I want to buy. I just continue to love her old stuff, and I see new music that floats my boat.

I sure wish Meshell well though. She is truly a gifted musician.

yeah i don't know what happened. my favorite is comfort woman and the world has made me the man of my dreams. both very great records. i even really enjoyed spirit music jamia too, cool departure.

but the singer/songwriter stuff i could do without IMHO.

She changed a few albums ago, she is one of those artist that don't stay in one mode too long. I dig Devil's Halo!
