Like it says, what kind of bassist are you? What's your style?
I voted Melodic and Groove. I like to get melodic and with a lot of my punk parts (I pretty much do ska/punk stuff) and I like to lay down a good groove with the ska parts.

I'm working on the melody bit now, so that it someday might be one third groover, one third melodic and the last third uncontrolled (it's a habit I'll never get rid of).

But ten years ago, as I see it now, I was actually uncontrolled in my attempt to be melodic, and the groove suffered from that. Now I play fewer tones altogether, and focus on groove (in a melodic way of course).

wake up with a beautiful stranger | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Location: Australia ~ Sydney, NSW | | i've often been referred to as a "lead" bass player  i don't know if that's my bandmates having a go at what i deem to be overplaying, but yeah, i stick it out a lot. theres so much i can do with my four strings, and by watching my teacher play (i swear this guy could kick the sh*t out of Wooten and Hamm, no lie hes A M A Z I N G), i've learnt that to limit myself by playing roots and simple embellished grooves would be an insult to my instrument's potential.
the bass guitar should not stand in any other instrument's shadow (least of all the guitar's), but should instead cast its own.

the band i played with did everything from punk to metal, and retro to ballads.
when the guitarist wrote a riff he liked, id break it down into a simple 4 chord run and just improvise and fool around with it.
but id write my own riffs too, generally more complicated than simple walking bass riffs.

I don't really think that I could define myself all that well, but if I had to pick I'd say that I'm more of a melodic player. I've put a lot of work into being able to groove a bit more naturally, and hopefully that's getting better. But as I say, I don't really think I could say what I am.
