i think the most overlooked aspect of being a great bass player is having a great tone. whos going to sound better on someones album, the guy with the p-bass or the guy with the fodera?

then again, jamerson played a p-bass..then why was he so godly?

cause he had a combonation of great feel and musical intelligence- he was able to create great lines, and play them great..same applies for jaco.

being able to "feel" music and to have the soul to live eat and breath the music is by far the most important part of any musician let alone a bass player

a good bass player will hear a note and look for the next note to influence the music in a subtle or dramatic way (eg a happy or sad chord) instead of breaking out the theory book and looking for the next note in the scale

Last time I got into this "discussion" I got a warning from a mod and took a voluntary leave of absence for a year.

Not really. We should listen to all elements and play off everyone equally.

The great bassist always knows tools and gears are secondary.

By tools, it's not limited to the physical (bass, amps). Also the musical and the abstract.

Because he had better tone than a Fodera?

I think being able to make up good and catchy bass lines and runs is one thing that makes a good bass player.
commitment to time and feel (for starters).
