IMO what makes a good bassist is a good sense of time. You can have the best chops, licks, techniques, and have more rhythm than anyone on the planet, but if you cant keep time, you're a lousy bassist.

I'm not sure what makes a good bass player. my advice is to call gerald veasley. He seems to have an idea because he's been espouting about it for the past 3 years. he even has a boot camp to make you one

I'm going to say:
  • note selection
  • note placement
  • dynamics
having these three qualitys, should make a pretty good bassist. of course timing, and technique go without saying.
