| | | | What is a one of Jason Newstead's "signature" basslines when he was in Metallica?

People call him a bad bassist all the time for some reason. I checked out his bass solos on youtube and they weren't bad at all. They were very creative. I listened to And Justice for all and I know the bass is too quiet because of the recording.
My question is, what are some "signature" basslines by him? |

Check this album out for some of his technical stuff. His talents were vastly unused in Metallica, much like all their other bassists.

His bass actually comes out of the mix. Not just that real deep low end that they gave him on all the other albums. |

Yeah, that's the way to talk! Jason wasn't limited to the style of music he did with Metallica. Of course he loved to play heavy metal (by the way, in his times Metallica didn't do much what could really considered metal, some of that stuff was really interesting and I liked it though, but it wasn't metal), but he has been influenced by various musicians and different kinds of music, loging to blues and jazz. He was more open-minded than Hetfield and Ulrich will ever be. They still want to be the second Black Sabbath or something like that...
As you said, it was just the same with Cliff Burton. He would listen to Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd and even R.E.M. when they were just a small college rock band that nobody who wasn't into that kind of music (nowadays you'd surely call it indie rock). An interviewer for a German heavy metal magazine who interviewed Cliff just a few days before his accident couldn't realize it at first some years later, that this "strange pop rock band", doing songs like Losing My Religion, Drive or Shiny Happy People, influenced one of his personal heavy metal heroes back in the mid-80's....
And now, we have Rob Trujillo. This guy is a really good groover. But unfortunately, Ulrich is a drummer like a philosopher: He think's of time being an abstract construct.
For me, it's hard to find a Jason Newsted signature bassline in a certain Metallica songs. He never was allowed to play the role in songwriting that he wanted to play. The best part he contributed to it, the well-known riff from My Friend of Misery, was crippled by Hetfield during the process of writing and arranging. I think his best works of that time can truly be found in his bass solo perfomances, captured on live albums and dvds. |

Newsted was very talented as can be seen in live performances and previous albums its just that Metallica pretty much destroyed any creativity he tried to come up with.
Newsted is my bass idol (as you can see from my avatar), he had amazing energy on stage and was a fantastic player. Very technical and passionate.

I don't know how much of Blackened Jason wrote, but it surely sounds mighty ****in cool on bass aswell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAvwod7BBK0 |
