Flea

He's actually gotten a lot better, taste-wise and technique-wise, since he discovered more things to do with a bass than slap. His MM tone is pretty gnarly.

Yes, as well you should! He cuts through 3 guitars and still carries the song!

Er. How 'bout Vic?

James Jamerson and Mingus, but I'd say it's their right hand technique that enabled them to cut so well, tonal options being what they were.

Bryan Beller, bassist for former Zappa "Stunt" guitarist Mike Keneally for 13 years, James LaBrie of Dream Theater's solo albums, occassional Steve Vai studio and current Vai touring bassist. The combination of his primary Ash/Maple/Maple fretboard Mike Lull M5, tastefull use of a variety of top-notch effects, and "mega-headroom" rigs (currently he's using an SWR SM-1500, Megoliath 8x10" and two Goliath III 4x10", equalling 1,500 watts and 16 10" speakers even *before* he hits FOH ) shows that a fingerstyle player can certainly cut through the mix as well as a pickstyle player.

I highly suggest picking up one of Keneally's latter works (the Guitar Therapy Live Special Edition CD with bonus DVD of a full 2 1/2-hour show at LA's famed Baked Potato), or Bryan's solo album View to get a feeling of his sound, either electric or ABG'ed (a wonderfully sounding and recorded Taylor AB-4 acoustic bass guitar that he uses as a Taylor clinician with Keneally)
