After seeing the threads ID'ing the Bass Players you admire or follow, was their a particular song that said to you " I want to do that!" ?
I started out on Piano as child and then Drums & Guitar when I was 11.
The one song that kept pulling me into bass was Greg Lake's riffs on The Curse of Baba Yaga (side two Pictures at an Exhibition). Pretty funky.
It was that and The Fish by Chris Squire from Yessongs |

There were other songs leading up to that in terms of bass awareness, but that was the tipping point. The tennis racket in the mirror was now a bass.

I had been brought up on motown, and the basslines of Jamerson made me want to play bass... but as a young kid, they were just too technical for me. 'Darlin Dear' and 'I Want You Back' were just too difficult, at the time.
I remember the first time i played Stand By Me, and i had that 'A-HA!' moment. It was the foundation that i built upon that has brought me to be the bassist i am today.

The Bass playing stands out so well, and is so off the wall.
It was the first time that I went "Wow, whats going on here?" "I'd love to play like that" |

There's a section with a guitar harmony, but underneath the bass goes off on a typical line. It's a very simple section, just playing roots, but the sound is superb. I heard it, and thought, that is amazing.

In 1964 I was 18 and playing rythmn guitar in a garage band. The bass line in "My Girl" (Jamerson?) made me eventually switch to bass.

For Bass, it was "Jump Into the Fire" by Harry Nilsson.
