i really like Backwoods because of its simplicity and Flea's awesome tone. proof that you don't need to play much to serve the song!

Gotta go with Higher Ground. Pretty earth shattering to me at an early age. After hearing I knew that I had to figure out the whole slap thing.

True Men Don't Kill Coyotes gets my vote, I love the distant sounding reverb on the bass.

I like early RHCP albums more than the late ones, and my favourite "slap" tunes are:

From "Red Hot Chili Peppers": True men don't kill coyotes, Get up and jump*
From "Uplift Mofo Party Plan": Walking on down the road, Skinny sweaty man, Backwoods, Fight like a brave
From "Mother's milk": Pretty Little Ditty, Higher ground, Nobody weird like me

*actually I hate the song itself, but bass+guitar are awesome

They make a "reincarnated" version of it.

I would think any envelope filter would get you at least close to that sound, but I could be wrong. The DOD pedal is fairly inexpensive though.

^Yes. This.

The B-section to Stone Cold Bush might be the funkiest thing ever created.
'Jungle Man' was the song I learned to thump on. 8 hours and many liters of sweat later and I was hooked.

Nobody mentioned 'Aeroplane'? Yeah, I know it's somewhat cliche now, but that line is very, very good. I think it's even funkier played finger style.

The solo section on 'Soul to Squeeze' is very cool
