The song "Vrooom", from Thrak, also played on the Deja Vroom DVD, is one of my favorite bass performances by Mr. Levin. The melody is just so gorgeous!!!! I tried to learn it once. Goodness gracious - it's way more complicated than it sounds.

I haven't heard too much of Tony Levin's work away from KC and Liquid Tension(/Trio) Experiment, but I love 'Neal And Jack And Me' and 'Waiting Man', both from the album Beat. And it's very difficult to choose any one track from Discipline: all his stick work is really great.

Hah! I'll win the seniority title here, I'll wager--

In 1972 or 73, I think----it's all a little hazy now--my guitar player friend said to me "Hey, this album has some great bass playing on it. Check this out!"

The artist was trumpeter/fluegelhornist Chuck Mangione. The album title was, I think, simply "Live". The bassist was Tony Levin--even with the shaved head, back then!

He was absolutely scorching. The group was two horn players (one playing some electric piano), him, and, I'm pretty sure, Steve Gadd (!) on drums. Levin did a great job of filling up the sound of the group--for the time, sounding pretty revolutionary. (As a point of reference, Stanley Clarke was just starting to take electric bass seriously about that time, according to interviews I read back in the day.)

All Levin's later successes were entirely unsurprising to me, based on what I heard back then. Of course he would fit in with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel! It made perfect sense.

All Levin fans should listen to this recording.

Yes, those three KC abums (Disc, 3, Beat) are Tony at his best, imho...

I will toss in my own love for Levin's work on the trio of 80's Crimson albums (the holy trinity!) and early Gabriel. Unparalleled music as well as bass work.

Being the lover and seeker of music that I am I am also very fond of:

Both of the Bozzio Levin Stevens albums
*Situation Dangerous (2000) and *Black Light Syndrome (1998)

Particularly Levin's interpretations of older Crimson tracks like Red & Larks' Tongues in Aspic: Part II (Live) on the *B' BOOM Official Bootleg- Live In Argentina (1995)

And anything involving Bill Bruford, as I think they've just got that special chemistry "spark" if you will.
*Bruford Levin: Upper Extremities/ B.L.U.E. - Blue Nights

*Resonator is pretty good too; featuring long time band mates Jerry Marotta, Jesse Gress, Larry Fast, with the addition of his brother Pete Levin

Those are my favs.
