When I was growing up,the bass was the thing to play when you couldn't play guitar and wanted to join a band. . Now, I'm taking guitar lessons for the first time and guitar is harder but......its a complete instrument. If a garage band is being formed, like a pick-up basketball team , you get a dude that plays guitar, has an amp and aspires to be a lead guitarist. Next there is the lead singer either a pretty chick or dude that can sort of sing. the guy that can't play lead is the rhythm guitarist. Finally a dude that has the biggest bass amp becomes the bass player. Where are you going to rehearse? Oh ,almost forgot the drummers house or garage. Ok , the scenario might be a little different but basically, the bass player is a replaceable part, whcih is the way it was for me when I was young(over 40 years ago) and I suspect this hasn't changed much.

No, I don't think so..

But *every* guitar player I've ever met thinks that they can play bass. Every one of them.

You're wrong. In my neck of the woods, everyone (thinks they) can play guitar. From what I've seen, guitarists FAR outnumber bass players.

And BigOldHarry is right - every guitar player thinks they can play bass, and the vast majority of them are wrong.

Throw a house brick down your local main street and ask those who it hits whether they play guitar or bass, no one will answer bass, but I bet that there will be at least 2 guitar players

Yeah, that's pretty much how I remember it, too. You forgot the obligatory "Turn that racket down, we're watching All In The Family!" yelled down the basement stairs by the drummer's mom or dad!

You can't say guitar in general is harder than bass... it's all about what you are trying to play. I think the guitar parts are just more advanced in the music you are into.

My opinion is that there are 3 guitar players to every bass player
