When did people start calling Paul "Macca"?

Never heard the word until I found TB. Is "Paul" too hard to say or something?

Apparantly it was John's pet name for him.

I don't know the man well enough to ever be comfortable using it.

It's like a pet "scouse" name - Paul is very common and most people know a few, so distinguish them with nicknames!

Like fellow footballers famously call David Beckham "Becks"...

Yeah it's well known here. I've known him as Macca for a long time.

I agree, it must be a British thing.
It's how a lot of the tabloids refer to him, and he's in them nearly every day at the moment.
It's a lot more pleasant than what they're calling his missus.

If you've never heard the word, it's your fault. You're American I assume? You've missed out.

I didn't know it was a common nickname for him in Britain. Just as long as KoJo or Entertainment Tonight didn't start it...

Thanks.

When I was growing up in England I was sometimes called Wacca. There's no rhyme or reason to it, but it's quite a common thing I think.

So how do you pronounce it?

Is it like the "Wacca wacca wacca" that the Jim Henson muppet character would say?

Exactly right. To be fair it was mainly one of my football (soccer) coaches who was a bit barmy and would just shout it from the sidelines during matches.

Luckily it didn't catch on, or else I'd probably have changed my name long ago.

I'd never heard of it till recently either, I always thought it was another stupid nickname made up by The Sun or something as they do.

The religious word is "Mecca" not Macca.
