Where do I start with Jonas Hellborg?

Hello all! I've been looking at picking up some Jonas Hellborg stuff (I've seen a couple of videos that really impressed me, and I want to know more!), but I'm not sure where to start...

I'm looking for anything that has a slighty "solo" vibe to it, and I'm especially interested in the stuff he did with Shawn lane. Where does a hellborg n00b start?

I'm not sure what is available in England, but any of the Shawn Lane cds are excellent - everythng from the "world fusion" to the pure shred. Check Amazon to get an ideao if what's available.

"Elegant Punk" is a great solo work,"Ars Moriende" is with Glen Velez,"The Word" is an Axiom disk of acoustic work.

I can't think of any bad ones...

Icon has a SWEET Indian fusion vibe. Now it's pretty heavily indian, so if you don't dig indian vocalists and stuff, avoid, but it's great in my book!

You should check out:

'Good People in Times of Evil' (with Shawn Lane and Selvaganesh) - a cool Indian fusion, but without the vocals of 'Icon'.

'Time is the Enemy' (with Shawn Lane and Jeff Sipe) - high-octane electric fusion.

'Paris' - The DVD of the 'Icon' band. Amazing musicianship.

Out of print, but worth the effort of tracking down:

'The Silent Life' - Solo acoustic bass guitar.

'Elegant Punk' - Solo electric bass.

'The Word' - Acoustic bass + Tony Williams on drums + a string quartet.

Jonas has a new album out on Monday. Soundclips here: http://www.abstractlogix.com/xcart/p...roductid=20947
(The lineup is Hellborg and Selvaganesh, joined by Niladri Kumar on the 'Zitar', a unique five-string sitar that he runs through guitar effects.)

What are "Temporal Analogues of Paradise" and "Octave of the holy innocents" like?

I'm hoping they're electric solo work, thats what I'm really looking for....supply of his work is so limited in England, even with Caiman USA shipping here!

There used to be a lot of clips of him doing bass solos live with the Mahavishnu Orchestra (Really amazing chording and slapping) on his unofficial site, but they're gone now...

Chris,
'Temporal Analogues of Paradise' is the first album by the trio of Shawn Lane (electric guitar), Jonas (electric bass) and Jeff Sipe (drums). Completely improvised fusion jams.

'Octave...' is a trio of Jonas (acoustic bass), Buckethead (acoustic guitar) and Michael Shrieve (drums). A very cool record.

Remastered/remixed versions of both albums came out last year.

The only solo electric bass record available is 'Elegant Punk'. Virgin Megastore at Piccadilly Circus have loads of Jonas discs available. Your local branch ought to be able to order in whatever you want.

www.amazon.com (the American site) has sound clips from all of his albums (even the out of print ones).

Here's some video for you:

A trio from early 2004 with drummer Jeff Sipe and Paul Hanson on FX-soaked bassoon:

(Have heard that a more recent date by this trio was filmed for a future DVD release.)

Hellborg, Lane, Selvaganesh and Andrea Marchesini from 2003:

www.jonashellborg.de is a fansite. It used to have some great video clips, but they've disappeared recently.
