I was listening to some old Flim and the BB's last night and got to wondering what ever happened to him. He was really one hell of a player. Alembic 5 string if I recall. He had a awesome sense of style and note selection. |

| | | | Jimmy Johnson (one of my favorite players) has been James Taylor's bassists for many, many years. If you want to hear some amazing pop bass playing, check out the double James Taylor Live CD with Carlos Vega on drums and Don Grolnick on piano... amazing section! He plays on the past 6 or 7 CD's, and all are worth owning.
Jimmy also played quite a lot with Alan Holdsworth, and I believe continues to do so on occasion.

| | | | Thanks KJung, I had no idea he was working with Taylor but I really have not listened to any Taylor in many years, but will now. If I remember correctly it was Jimmy "Flim" Johnson that was instrumental in working with Alembic to design and build one of the first 5 string basses with a "B" string. |

I believe it's a 5 string on a 4 string neck! |

I saw him with Holdsworth and Chad Wackerman sometime around 1988. Great show. |

Saw Tribal Tech back in mid 90's at Johnny D's, used to live right around the corner on Holland. |

I know all the fusion stuff is impressive, but hearing Jimmy play real tunes is something. Jimmy with Carlos Vega was one of my favorite rhythm sections of all time. Now, Gadd is touring and recording with James, and Jimmy sounds great in that context also.
Again, that live James Tayler double disc is my favorite Jimmy J. recording (although I love some of the BB's stuff also).
Very impressive that a bassist can be at the top of his game on the fusion side (and Holdsworth is about as intense and difficult as that genre gets IMO), and also sound like the best Nashville studio ace playing with James Taylor.
He literally is my favorite bassist, and from everything I've heard, he is a wonderful, humble person. What's not to like about that. He even makes that Alembic sound good |

For me those two comments say so much and I could not agree with more for both rather obvious points they make. Thanks all for posting those additional video's I know have a huge renewed interest in hearing more from Jimmy, he should always be considered one of our pioneers and one that still can totally rock... |
