Grace Jones live, "slave to the rythm"

Hear that Fender P-bass laying down that foundation. This man is a killer but who is he?

Anybody have an idea?

Without a doubt, that is Mr. Trevor Horn. A phenomenal bass player, actually. Any Yes fans out there might already know this, as he is the man behind the bass (not Chris Squire) on the amazing "Run Through The Light" on the "Drama" album. A standout track, to be sure.

He was the musical director not only for Grace Jones during that period, but also UK disco diva Tina Charles.

See? There's so much more to the man than just The Buggles and being the quintessential 80's uber-producer. That guy could really play!

A bit of trivia....if I remember correctly, Trevor's Buggles video for 'Video Killed The Radio Star' was the first video played on MTV......talk about predicting the future!

Was just revisiting the Drama CD and that track is certainly a standout. The last verse has some really sweet lines. An underated(and really unknown) player to be sure.

Glad you agree, Matrok. Horn's tone on that track is great, too. A really stark contrast to Chris Squire's usual clanky Ric sound. Horn can be seen playing what looks to be an Aria Pro II SB1000 in the "Video Killed.." video. I wouldn't be surprised if he was using that bass on the Yes track as well. The midrange coolness would certainly suggest that he did.

(Horn's bass playing on that Yes track is also quite a testament to the quality of Squire's character, too. Certainly not much ego there. This is also in evidence in the fact that Billy Sherwood is responsible for some of the basslines on the Conspiracy material, not Squire.)

I'm also convinced that it is really Mr. Horn who is playing the basslines on ABC's "The Look Of Love" and "Poison Arrow". The tone just seems to be very "Horn-ish". Besides, it was his production that really made these iconic 80's ditties really shine, IMO.

Haven't heard any of the Conspiracy material(and I call myself a Squire fan! )

I agree on the Poison Arrow theory, never thought of it before. Can't think of the bass in Look of Love other than the synth line, so I can't comment there.

At the end of the video Trevor Horn says the percussionist played the bass part on the record?

And don't forget he produced those SEAL records that sold trillions of copies, and sound pretty good too.

Horn's production credits are as lofty and amazing as they come. Along with Mutt Lange, he was THE man in the pop production world. Frankie Goes To Hollywood, ABC, Yes' surprisingly breakout hit album "90125", and on into the 90's with the previously mentioned Seal.

What seems to be such a shame, though, is the fact that over time, Horn seemed to further remove himself from actual bass playing and relied much more heavily on sampled bass and other session musicians. I guess it was just professional and personal evolution. But, one really can't deny that he had the chops and style back in the day.

I can't exactly recall, but didn't he drag a bass out of mothballs when he performed "Video Killed The Radio Star" with the reformed Buggles at that special All-Star Tribute To Trevor Horn performance last year? I'll have to check that out again on YouTube to be sure.
