even tho hes not in a metal band at the moment, evan brewer is the best technical guy IMO. a lot of metal guys can "shred" but theyre not very clean with it and it just looks like theyre playing well when in reality they arent.

evan is a monster.

The guy in Meshuggah does use a pick, though.

There is no best, though there are a lot of really outstanding players in many styles.

Geezer Butler is amazing, so is Steve Harris.

Al Cisneros (Sleep, Shrinebuilder, Om) can really tear it up when he chooses to.

Sami Hinkka from Ensiferum is also pretty damn good. Especially in the song "Elusive Reaches."

ICS Vortex is mainly known for his vocals, but he's a pretty good bassist as well.

Dave Ellefson is pretty damn awesome, although he does use a pick.

Just out of curiosity, why does it matter that they use a pick or not? If you're planning on learning some lines you can always play with your fingers.

Joe from Intronaut has some of the most amazing basslines, but they aren't extreme metal like nile and the like. More of a post metal. He was playing a fretless Pedulla last I heard and it sounds sick.

Sean Malone's been mentioned (rightfully), so I'll add Steve DiGiorgio to the list.

Mike Flores from Origin, too bad most of their songs are written in such a way that the bass is hard to distinguish. Go see them live and you will be blown away by this guy.

My personal favorite is Cliff, not for "technical skill" persay, but just for his wildness, enthusiasm and intensity. Last time I checked metal isn't a competition. If you want to hear something played note-for-note and rigorously controlled, listen to some Trad Jazz.

Worry less about who is "best" and more about who you like the most. Also don't worry about if they use a pick or not.

Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) really cool dude too.

Funny you mention Nile. Their bass, at least on recordings, is not something I really pay attention to. The overall atmosphere is what I dig about them.

Check out Jeroen from Obscura. A little too polished as a whole for my tastes, but the bass playing is awesome!

Also, as others mentioned, Steve di Giorgio is a must. I find the Fiend for Blood EP with Autopsy to be among his best works.

Happy hunting!

Oh, speaking of Steve, the bass on Death albums is always a treat. Note, he wasn't on all of them.

Dan Maines (Clutch) always blows me away with his playing. I think he typically plays without a pick.

Sean Malone(Cynic), Steve DiGorgio(Death), Alex Webster(Cannibal Corpse) and Erlend Caspersen(Blood Red Throne) are hands down the best ( in my opinion ) in the metal scene today.

Erlend is seriously crazy when it comes to bass playing, and not just metal. I think it's safe to say, he is like the Jaco of metal nowadays.
