evan is a monster. |

There is no best, though there are a lot of really outstanding players in many styles.
Geezer Butler is amazing, so is Steve Harris.
Al Cisneros (Sleep, Shrinebuilder, Om) can really tear it up when he chooses to.
Sami Hinkka from Ensiferum is also pretty damn good. Especially in the song "Elusive Reaches."
ICS Vortex is mainly known for his vocals, but he's a pretty good bassist as well.

Just out of curiosity, why does it matter that they use a pick or not? If you're planning on learning some lines you can always play with your fingers.

Last time I checked metal isn't a competition. If you want to hear something played note-for-note and rigorously controlled, listen to some Trad Jazz.

| | | | Worry less about who is "best" and more about who you like the most. Also don't worry about if they use a pick or not.
Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) really cool dude too.
Funny you mention Nile. Their bass, at least on recordings, is not something I really pay attention to. The overall atmosphere is what I dig about them. |

Also, as others mentioned, Steve di Giorgio is a must. I find the Fiend for Blood EP with Autopsy to be among his best works.
Happy hunting! |

| | | | Oh, speaking of Steve, the bass on Death albums is always a treat. Note, he wasn't on all of them. |

| | | | Sean Malone(Cynic), Steve DiGorgio(Death), Alex Webster(Cannibal Corpse) and Erlend Caspersen(Blood Red Throne) are hands down the best ( in my opinion ) in the metal scene today.
Erlend is seriously crazy when it comes to bass playing, and not just metal. I think it's safe to say, he is like the Jaco of metal nowadays. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
