Who do you think ought to inspire you but doesn't?

I know, it's an odd thought...

But for me, it's Phil Lesh. He's a great bass player. I was a major Deadhead as a teen. Yet I never really "got" his playing, never felt inspired to play like him.
Rocco , Entwhistle, , Jamerson, Jack Bruce - those guys hit me in the guts.
Lesh, it was like "well that's interesting..."

Anyone like that for you?

Yeah, lots. For me it's Geddy Lee that first comes to mind.

Les Claypool, really want to like him, but just can't get into Primus.

Wow , this is actually.....very interesting idea for a thread . I think the entire thing comes from the fact that you might like other things about the band or the people of the band as people and respect them as skilled musicians , but cant really like them as inspirations ;

I'd mention Trent Reznor . I love what he does, what sort of musical ideas he has , how he composes and what kinda philophy he lives by , but I cant listen to NiN tracks .

Oh , and John Myung too....

Same here with John Myung. I love Dream Theater, but when it comes to inspiration, he's near the bottom of the list.

Anyone that is overly technical...I like melodic bassists.

I would have to say all of the regular superstars - Jaco, Geddy, Vic, etc...

Don't get me wrong, I dig their talents and abilities but when it comes to "inspiring me" I always fall back on my standard heros - Jamerson, Dunn and Weeks.

Oh, and I can't forget Bootsy!

I suppose the ones that come to mind are Entiwistle and JPJ. Everyone rants on about how good they are but I just don't hear it.

I get really weird looks whenever this comes up, but Jaco leaves me totally cold most of the time.

Here's another vote for Jaco. I'll give him my respect, but he doesn't get me all hot and bothered about playing bass.

I think that this makes a good point. For me, it's Stanley Clarke. When I was in High School, I listened to a couple of his albums because of the type of jazz it was at the time, but style-wise, my tastes changed and he's not in my "pocket", so to speak. I think that there are so many fantastic players out there, but the ones that "inspire" are the ones that appeal to a person's love of the style of music, too. For me; Nathan East, for example, or bassists from somewhat "obscure" groups like "The Producers", a band out of CA in the 80's, whose 2nd bassist had an awesome sound and great ideas for the music they were putting out. (Check out the album "Coelacanth".) Really changed the sound of the band! These players inspire and direct my playing because they're doing the type of music that I want to do and they're pioneering in it at this time.

Cliff Burton for me. Of course I respect his legacy, but I can't tell a single time in which I've felt a bit enthusiastic about his contributions to bass playing (The only possible exception is "Orion").

Jaco. I just can't listen to that music (with the exception of "All American Alien Boy"), therefore, he's totally not an inspiration to me at all.

McCartney and Burton also fit the above descrption for me, but I really can't stand that Weather Report-type stuff.

I like technical bass playing, but I have to say Victor Wooten. I liked him when he first came on the scene in the early 90s, but so much of his stuff is lacking teeth. I respect him and his abilities, but get real bored real fast.
