The death of Paul Gray was surely a huge blow for the band, the fans, the metal community and the bass community.
I am really happy to hear that Slipknot are willing to continue and I really hope it works out for them, the music and the fans. I know they said the will not replace Paul(how could they, they guy pretty much started the band), which is ok considering the fact that other members can provide the bass on recordings(all of them are really able musicians that have played bass before).
However they will have to find somebody sooner or later to play bass live.I really don't think that any of the current members will do it, but that would be an interesting turn of the events.
So who do you think they will bring in?
My personal guesses are the following(order based in probability)
-Shawn Economakis(from stone sour)
A really obvious choice. Has been close to the band(I even think he worked for them as tour manager or something), is a top notch player and we know Taylor already brought over Jim from Stone sour.
-Session guy(not super famous necessarily)
I could see a lot of great session bass players wanting this gig(for some strange reason Chris Chaney came first in my mind. That dude has played on a lot of heavier stuff lately. Maybe JMJ? Perhaps he would like to try heavier stuff than NIN) and it is also kind of a safe choice for the band, even though I think in this case whoever gets it will be really well hidden in the background.
-Relatively unknown guy(a.k.a. the Govt mule strategy)
Bring in some guy that is not well known at all but still has quite some experience on his back. Really good strategy if they don't want to give the media food for stupid stories.
-Christian Olde Wolbers
I know that's a rather weird one(especially since he has been playing guitar mostly lately), but he was really involved in the roadrunner united project with Joey.
-James LoMenzo
He is a super pro and has actually replaced Gray on some HAIL! shows.
Seriously the list could go on and on. But I would like to see what other guys here think. I only hope that whatever the band chooses to do ,is that the continue Paul Gray's vision even if that means quitting.

| | | | well apparently mark morton, lamb of god's guitarist, filled in on bass back when paul was hospitalized in '05, so he seems like a pretty good choice.
others:
-shawn from stone sour
-rob "blasko" nicholson, who has played with rob zombie and ozzy
-jason newsted? he hasn't been up to much lately, i think that'd be really cool but i doubt it would happen
-fieldy from korn
-rex brown from pantera/down |

If they do auditions though, I'm in! |

Blasko could definitely be a possibility.
I think Jason wouldn't be a great choice. I feel his style is a little too old school for Slipknot.
Fieldy and all the guys from Korn are close with Slipknot but man his style is way to different I think.
Rex would also be pretty interesting, but I remember reading somewhere that he had some health issues and he is been trying to tour as little as possible. Seriously check recent live photos. The guy looks dangerously thin.

I really dont think that it would be a some unknown guy or audition would be or something.
Anyway - he always will be a session, so. |

Rex Brown would be a very interesting choice. In the end it doesn't matter, we'll never see the guy's face. |

| I disagree with you - i think he will be without mask.
He just session - not replacement. |

i read a lot of possibles in here. ill throw bryan beller on the list. he can clearly hang.
i personally dont think it will be some all-star bassist. too much attention. i dont think they will do anything but tour anymore anyway. i maybe see one last album and then a performing memorial for a few years until they fizzle into obscurity. i dont see a nu metal band, regardless of how iconic, doing reunion tours in 20 years. their peers, such as korn, are having a hell of a time keeping it together.
