Talk about under-appreciated! One of the greats you never hear too much about going all the way back to Brand X. Side note, it was on Dennard's solo album that Marcus first slapped Teen Town, a great album for Marcus fans.

Gonna have to pick that up. Guy's unreal. I'd heard of him but never looked into his stuff. But this performance turned my head around. It's like he's got two grooves at once-how great would playing with that guy be? Sick. Maybe I need to join a drum forum!

I've got the DVD, I love the sound of Kenwood's drums on these performances.

My favorite Kenwood Dennard performance is still what I believe to be his major label recording debut: Pat Martino's Joyous Lake album from 1976. He's playing a textbook of classic fusion drumming, like Cobham + Gadd...simultaneously! Just an amazing sense of how to subdivide in non-obvious ways. I've been listening to that album since it came out and I still get surprised by the rhythm of the melody after he sets up the intro groove in "M'Wandishi"

+1, always a personal favorite of mine! They did a reunion album about ten years ago with James Genus on bass. Pat Martino has always been at the top of the jazz guitar echelon for me.

Yeah, that's what reeled me in- he can play two grooves at once, and they're both cool. Makes the pocket a mile wide. Never heard that before, stunning.

Looks like they thought so too!
