I'd heard of him but never looked into his stuff. But this performance turned my head around. It's like he's got two grooves at once-how great would playing with that guy be? Sick. He's playing a textbook of classic fusion drumming, like Cobham + Gadd...simultaneously! Just an amazing sense of how to subdivide in non-obvious ways. I've been listening to that album since it came out and I still get surprised by the rhythm of the melody after he sets up the intro groove in "M'Wandishi" |

They did a reunion album about ten years ago with James Genus on bass. Pat Martino has always been at the top of the jazz guitar echelon for me.

Makes the pocket a mile wide. Never heard that before, stunning.
