You know, I was just listening to Jaco playing TEEN TOWN and was thinking, who do you think truly carries on the the panache and feel of him in today's music (jazz) scene--the one single player?
My bass life has been 100% hard rock, but love and admire the jazz greats more than any other as, IMO, them being more deeply a player than other genres. <no defensive remarks required here, OK?>

But what i think you really mean is who is as inovative and original, and that is a real hard question to answer because there are countless talented bassists in todays jazz scene. I think when looking back on todays players victor wooten stands out as a bassist who has inspired many with his unique technique and great playing(even tho i'm not a huge fan of his solo work). |

However, he is no caron copy of Jaco. He once said that after becoming a huge fan of Jaco, he would have been happy just to be able to do a passable imitation of him. However, after time, he discovered his own voice, and a great and unique voice it is.
As for Richard Bona, I can hear the Jaco influence at times, but I don't think he's comparable to Jaco in any sense, not in terms of playing, his sound, his writing ability etc etc. |

If you want one that can pull off the Jaco basslines as well as Jaco did himself, I think you'll find thousands (me not included). It's easy to copy, harder to be truly unique and as successful as he was.

The electric bass before Jaco, and the electric bass after Jaco. The way the electric bass was perceived, not only in jazz, but in music in general was fundamentally changed. There are very few musicians who do that, regardless of instrument. One could cite Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Charlie Christian, Jimmy Blanton, Jimi Hendrix, Edward Van Halen, and maybe Chet Atkins as those sorts of musicians.

I bought it on eBay a couple of years ago and it is installed over my fireplace.
Looks nice, if a bit reliced.
