Let's just say those tones involve "less work".

I always loved Kai's tone during this period.

Honestly that's a tough one. but If I have to pick only one, I would say rex brown from pantera. he has such a killer sound on I'm broken by pantera. I've heard the isolated bass track to that song and his bass sounds phenomenal. here's the isolated bass track to I'm broken by pantera.

Jaco had a very unique tone until everyone and his brother copied it.

Rick Danko of The Band had a unique tone that suited his style well. Kenny Gradney of Little Feat also had a very distinct sound that is oft overlooked, IMO.

Decades ago I bought a record via the cover. A band called Quartz.

The bass was so out front I still remember it. Let me crank up some vinyl.

Trev Boulder with Wishbone Ash had a killer out front tone.

Felix Pappalardi is perhaps the most forgotten of bass legends. ( Guys be careful who you marry) Nantucket Sleigh ride is a work. Western? And didn't he produce a little thing called Cream?

Another unsung genius in the times of Darwin.

I completely agree on both counts except that Kenny is still alive.

Al Cisneros has an amazing tone on Om's Adviatic Songs, so deep and clear but manages to cut through the cellos and everything else so well. Its making me want a Ric and an Ampeg SVT rig even more.

As for HEAVY metal tones that can actually be heard very clearly I'd say Tim Bagshaw from Electric Wizard's tone on Come My Fanatics is incredible. So low, the distortion works so well and fills so much of the sonic space. The bass is what makes that album so heavy.

Jaco to be sure.

Also Janek Gwizdala's tone (or maybe style?) is really recognizable.

Apples and oranges. Depends on what you like. Everyone has their own 'tone'.
I like my tone. It's true stereo with each pickup going to a seperate amp. For me, it dosen't get much better.
There are a lot of players tones that I like but those sounds are unique to the songs they play on. You couldn't take Les Claypool's tone, for example and use that for Roundabout at all. But it sure works for Primus, especially if they ever attempted that song. It would be interesting, no doubt.

Chas Chandler had an interesting, hollow body bass sound ... think of the bass tone on the Animals classic "We Gotta Get Outta This Place". As long as I'm talking hollow body bass players ... Jack Casady had/has a super cool and unique distortion bass sound ... especially in his Jefferson Airplane salad years. Check out the entire "Bless Its Pointed Little Head" album ... as quintessential a rock bass tour de force as John Entwistle on The Who "Live at Leeds", IMHO.

+1. The way he hits the strings generates a sound that's instantly recognizable. "Burgers" is also a must listen album.
