Actually I never realized how many players have unique tones till I started listening to the isolated bass stuff. Man some of the stuff you had no idea was going on. Take a listen when you get a chance you will find there are a lot of unique tones out there that are being lost to the mix. I agree with the above there are many great players who have their own tone.

Unique is a very interesting property. Maybe no one else is doing it for a reason....

Out of my influences, hard to choose between:

Bruce Thomas (walks the tightrope between Duck Dunn and prog rock...he even approaches a Jaco-like tone on a P-bass on his mid 80's stuff with Elvis Costello, which I don't care for but is unique)

Pino Palladino (love the massive bottom end thunder he laid down with John Mayer)

Robert DeLeo (perfect hard rock tone with STP)

Paul McCartney (Abbey Road...I need not say more)

Darryl Jones (love his slap tone on the Miles Davis Decoy CD...sounds like it comes from super low action)

Clint Conley, from Mission of Burma. I'm surprised he doesn't get more affection around here.

I saw in Brooklyn last night. The bass tone was massive, bone rattling, the sound of 10,000 boulders rolling down a mountainside.

I think John Paul Jones has a pretty unique tone in general. Fat, round and deep, sometimes even a bit muddy. Very recognizable. Also, the strange tone he got on "Houses of the Holy" (the song, not the album) is awesome, and very unique. The "Heartbreaker" tone is also classic.

Claypool or McKagan. They both have very signature tones.

Also the chorus of "Ramble On." It's about the only classic rock song I can stand to listen to any more.

Peter Hook - particularly if you hear him live. No one beats Hooky in my book.

Never heard another bass player that sounds like Steve Harris, except me which doesn't count because I'm copying him on purpose ( tribute band)
