Michael League has become a recent favorite of mine. I've never been able to make a Pbass sound like he does.

*dUg Pinnick - I had just Started playing bass when I discovered King's X. Imo he has the perfect bass tone.

* Rex Brown - Big, punchy, aggresive sound. I have always loved his style of playing and he is probably the bassist I admire most.

* Sean Yseult - She Rocks. Massive bass sound with a tribal sort of beat.

Alain Caron and Gary Willis. Two of my favorites that often are not prominent on these lists. Also love the 12 string tone from Cheap Trick.

I can dig Chris Squire's tone on pretty much all of their albums from Yes (debut) to Drama, though, to pick an album, I'd say Drama specifically.

Marcus Miller's another favourite for me, especially the Silver Rain album.

Also, McCartney's work on his Ric, like "Rain" or "Paperback Writer".

Marcus Miller has a very unique tone that many emulate. When he starts playing you immediately recognize his sound. Another bassist with a unique sound and style is Anthony Jackson. His use of the his B string is recorded in every thing that he plays.

George Porter Jr.
Paul McCartney (65/68: Revolver etc)
Rocco Prestia in early TOP
anything "dark-with-attack"
HATE trebly sounds (the great Chris Squire, lots of Entwistle, they were great but not my cup of tea).
I dream of a bass with the tone control ranging from 0 to 3...

+1 dUg Pinnick
Chris Squire - it's the Relayer tone for me
Geddy - Red Barchetta is great, but the black Wal tone from Show of Hands was my Holy Grail for the longest time.
Gary Willis - always
Jimmy Johnson - live at the Beacon

Not yet mentioned
Lee Sklar - Your Smiling Face live
Jimmy Haslip's chorused fretless sound on Live Wires
Dee Murray on Amoreena
