| | | | Geddy Lee's live sound is fantastic. I've watched some of the Rush In Rio DVD in the past purely to listen to the bass tone. Absolutely brilliant.
I also really like Mike Dirnt's tone, especially on Dookie. I guess it's not to everyone's taste as it could be considered muddy, but I really like it regardless.

Paul Samwell-Smith - One of the first overdriven bass sounds. Check out The Yardbirds' "Smokestack Lightning", "Lost Woman", "Shapes of Things", and "I'm a Man".
Chas Chandler - His punchy sound carried many of The Animals best songs. "It's My Life", "We gotta Get out of This Place", "Boom Boom".
John Entwhistle
Phil Volk - Awesome fat sound for the time on Paul Revere & The Raiders' "Hungry" and "Louise". He did overdub some octaves, fifths, and fuzz bass at times.
Jack Casady - One of the most up front bass sounds especially in live performance.
Nick Simper - His prominent percussive sound on the first Deep Purple album is unrivaled.
Roger Waters - Minimalist player with some interesting sounds on occasion.
Tim Bogert
Jack Bruce
Leo Lyons
John Paul Jones
Geezer Butler
Glenn Cornick - Especially check out his sound on Jethro Tull's "To Cry You a Song", "Bouree", "Living in the Past", and "Nothing is Easy". At this point in his career he was using various short-scale Gibsons.
John Ford - His sound on The Strawbs' Grave New World album is my all-time favorite P-Bass recording. Amazing percussive low end and cutting high notes.

I have seen videos of them playing live where he is using Ampeg SVT and 810, but he has a very nice grindy P bass tone on the recording.

although I don't know who the bassist is, the tone on the Jethro Tull song rocks on the road is pretty damn awesome. Anyone know?
and what about John McVie? he had some great sounding tracks also.
I also used to really dig the bass tones on many of the Kansas records.
another unique tone I liked was Johnettes picked p bass on the Concrete Blonde records ( she sounded great live too)

Squire is the man.
I also admire the tone Geddy have on his Ric/ Jazz until Moving pictures, and his Jazz tone on Clockwork Angels.
Then there is Dave Meros of Spock's Beard
And, finally, ME! |
