Other types of music, Paul McCartney on abbey road, or the double bass player on Arthur H first record (best DB sound I heard on a record)

Instead of mentioning names of bassists, I'll go with equipment.

Any P, J, Stingray or any decent bass played with round wounds or flat wounds through a decent amp and cab (2 15s first choice) is my favorite sound.

I think the thread should ask, Which bass player has your favorite style of playing?

As for sound, there is nothing secret or magic about getting sounds out of a bass.

John Moyer of Disturbed and Adrenaline Mob.
John Myung of Dream Theater.
And finally, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden.

That is a killer track!

Lately, for me, it's Soulive's Neal Evans B3 bass tone.

It's so fat and round, no clank, grind or seemingly any treble at all. I would love to get close to it using a bass guitar.

Pat Badger's tone on this:

Extreme - Get the Funk Out

Bass part starts at 2:00.

I like the little fight he has with Nuno Bettencourt over the set list around 1:50.

Jorgen Carlsson of Gov't Mule. Great tone, proficient player, equally skilled at being powerful and subtle. A worthy successor to Woody.

Neil is one of my favorite "bass" players even though he plays bass on keys. However, he lays down some of the sickest bass lines I've ever heard.

I would have to say the top three for me are James Jamerson, Paul Denman (bass player for Sade) and Timothy B. Schmit (Eagles).

Entwistle does it for me. Chris Squire's tone on "Roundabout" a close second. Of all the bands I've ever heard, a regional WI band in the 60's and 70's had a bass player who's tone blew me away. The band was "Tongue" from Stout, later Milwaukee and the bass player was Rick Clark. He was the first player I heard using a P bass, Rotosound roundwounds and an SVT. My own bass tone started there.

Funny, most of these guys play with a pick which I can't do to save my life but I'm constantly searching to find the right tone that makes it sound like I am. And no, I'm not going to learn. Spent too many years playing the way I do to change it up now.
