Very talented, I need to develop those chops, with whom do you relate his bass playing??

pretty sure it's david labruyere....one of the reasons I converted from a j guy to a p guy....super talented, and kills that classic p-bass with rounds through an ampeg sound....between him and Pino I'd say John knows how to pick bass players

+1

They call him DeLa

Great bass player, got to see him on John Mayers first tour. He's on the Live DVD "Any Given Thursday".

As far as learning to play like that, nothing but hard work and listening is gonna help you. Learn theory - study how all types of chords are constructed and learn your arpeggios in all keys. Listen to tons of music and practice improvising along with it. The real challenge will be to do what somebody like DeLa - or Pino - does without overplaying.

I developed my playing around him actually...his album playing is legit, and then he delivers live like a monster.

Great tone! A real smooth player with a relaxed feel! other than that he is not playing anything of a mystery, he is just outlining the chords and adding little fills and passing notes. Learn your chord tones and scales and this won't be a mystery to you either!
