Who are the modern "journeymen"?

Sign in to disble this ad
Some of my favorite bassists are the hard-working "journeymen" whose careers started as studio session rats in the 1970s: Tony Levin, Will Lee, Nathan East, Leland Sklar. One of the things I really enjoy about these players is their willingness to play only what's needed, to completely supress their ego for the needs of the song. They exude professionalism in every aspect of their work: They play the right notes at the right time, nothing more, nothing less. I suspect they also show up on time, prepared, and sans drama. Something about that work ethic really appeals to me.

So...

Who are the modern day journeymen? I realize Tony, Will, Nathan, & Leland are all still working steadily...I also realize that the music industry is a very different business than it was 40 years ago, so there might not be session players of that caliber any more. Are there any musicians out there making a solid living and a solid reputation for being the go-to guy for studio sessions or touring work when someone wants an ultra-reliable, ultra-humble, ultra-talented bass player?

Chris Chaney, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, and Pino Palladino (not exactly a new player, but certainly revered) are the three other big names in session bass land. I'm not deep into the industry at all, and there are probably a plethora of other players beyond what you and I have mentioned, but those are the ones that come to mind.
