Who is Most Worthy of More Attention?

Sign in to disble this ad
I vote Rhonda Smtih! I have been listening to RS2 for the first time in few months, and the sister is bad! She ought to be moving CDs like Marcus Miller at least. She can play her (sexy) butt off and sing. She is a great writer, and her music is very well produced.

BTW, did I say she is cute too?

Mods: Please forgive me for commenting on Rhonda's looks. I suspect that she is established enough that she is not losing sleep over what some amatuer on TB is saying about her.

Back on topic: Who else do you all feel should have wider recognition?

I'd say Adam Nitti. I mean he's well known and all to us but I think he should be up in the Victor Wooten status area if you asked me.

And also I love Michael Manson's stuff. Awesome slapper and groover.

+1!
he did a clinic at Bass Emporium a while back. played this six string beast. made it his b!tch! good crap! i went up to say howdy and shake his hand afterwards... he's at least 3 inches shorter than me, and his hands are significantly smaller than mine.
it was one of those moments where you either go "crap! i should just give up now!" or "man, i gotta go home and practice!"
he ruled a sixer and i struggle with just 4. man, that was humbling.

Tough one! Every time I browse my CDs & LPs I see cats I think people should hear more about.
Todays candidates would be Reggie Washington and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Both cats can funk it up or take it outside at will, lay it in the pocket or take it to space. Jamaaladeen has been around a very long time, but a lot of people still don't know who he is, the guy is a treasure!

Another awesome bassist/singer/cutie worthy of greater notice is Debra Killings. I am waiting for another solo CD from her too.

One player who does not get mentioned often enough is Richard Bona.

Hey check out Debra Killings and her JP Sig Yamaha. No one can say they can't handle six due to size alone after seeing her!

I've been listening to him and following his works since 1996. The guy got with the second place in the international solo bass competition in bass player magazine couple of years ago (I was very happy to see that he started getting some recognition). IIRC, when Wooten saw him playing, he said "I need to hit the woodshed" (or something along these lines).

Wow. That killed. Definitely going to look for more of her stuff!

Thanks for the tip!

Thread contribution: Danny Weinkauf with They Might Be Giants. Super solid on the straight ahead stuff, but, and this may sound weird, but I have kids, he TEARS IT UP on several of the tunes on TMBG's new kids' album 'Here Come the 123's'.

It's always bugged me that Gary Willis has never had a Bass Player cover/feature.

And I don't recall either getting as much as an article in BP...not 100% on that, FWIW.

I will add two NYC/Downtown kinda guys-
William Parker
Fima Ephron

I also think Rhonda Smith is bad & knows her stuff. Her Intellipop album didn't really float my boat, though....enough that I didn't even bother to check out RS2.

RS2 is much more of an r&b CD whereas Intellipop leaned more towards Smooth jazz. I think the singing, songwriting and playing are killer!
