Who played on Chris Whitley´s "Big Sky Country" ?

Sign in to disble this ad
hi everybody,

so does anybody know who really played that fretless bass on the studio recording of Chris Whitley´s "big sky country" ?
was it alan gevaert ? i know that he was his on and off live bass player, and he is whitley´s bass player in live shows that you can find on youtube.
i only have the cd maxisingle, which has no detailed credits of who plays what on which song.
btw very cool bass line IYAM. rather dark sound. cool double stops (hard to pull off that sliding one eb+bb/d+bb/eb+bb up on the 13th/15th fret).
and, it was probably a wal fretless that was used for that song. alan gevaert played one live, and in the video, you can also see that same bass.

cheers,
lowstar

Daryl Johnson played bass on Big Sky Country, Alan Gevaert only played bass on Make The Dirt Stick on that album. Great album by a great artist who died way too soon.

Chris Whitley is my favorite artist. I literally cried when I found out he was going to die and then when he did, I played nothing but his CD's for at least a month. I'm so thankful I got to see him perform.

I'm not sure, but I think it may be a composite of parts, bass guitar & synth/keyboard. I seem to remember bass pedals live on the supporting tour.

I heard an early work tape of that song once & was told the backing vocals were re-worked in to the final version, so maybe something similar with the bass?

Last night after I pulled this CD for the credits for this thread, I listened to it. It has been a few years since I last listened to it, such a great debut album and production!

Wow, I need to go dig that CD up, haven't listened to it in years. I didn't realize he died either. Saw him way back when Living with the Law was out at Tipitinas here in New Orleans. It was a great show. The opening act was a new band, The Cranberries, who actually were excellent that night as well.
