Long before the electric bass was even invented, the whole slap and pull technique was implemented and invented by double bass players who wanted to project their sound. It was good way to get you heard above other players. It also provided some percussive feel in situations where a drummer was lacking. I think they did more pulling than thumb slapping?

I personally do not like the sound, and I do not like the way it feels on my hands when I slap on a fretless (this may sound bizarre). |

My old fretless was a Pau Ferro Fingerboard Peavey Accelerator, and I ate four millimeter deep valleys down the neck within 6 months of playing on it. My fretless now is a Zon... long live phenolic/birch fingerboards!
