"Real Bass Players Don't Slap Fretless Basses."

Long before the electric bass was even invented, the whole slap and pull technique was implemented and invented by double bass players who wanted to project their sound. It was good way to get you heard above other players. It also provided some percussive feel in situations where a drummer was lacking. I think they did more pulling than thumb slapping?

I use to slap on a fretless... Although I find that when I'm playing slap it sounds better on a fretted... Les Claypool blows me away though :P

Yeah, for the most part I find fretless slap to sound pretty naff...Les gets a good woody sound though.

You actually can slap on a fretless, and as a matter of fact a lot of players do it.

I personally do not like the sound, and I do not like the way it feels on my hands when I slap on a fretless (this may sound bizarre).

Of course you can slap on a fretless, I can, but it sounds 'ok' at best (on my bass!), not good enough to really use in a song context. Imo

I heard it was bad for the wood on the neck to slap a fretless, is that true?

It can eat up the heel of the neck, if you do it a lot.

Thats why you use a slapplate or epoxy the fretboard

Thanks for posting that video. I included it in The Slap Bass Welcome Center.

I have an MVP Pentabuzz with a polyester fretboard, but I like the sound of my Warwick Thumb 5 fretless much more (naked neck). Norwood slaps his 'Wick, and it's NOT epoxied.

You failed to mention that its a naked EBONY fingerboard, one of the hardest woods you can find in nature and the best wood for fretless. My old fretless was a Pau Ferro Fingerboard Peavey Accelerator, and I ate four millimeter deep valleys down the neck within 6 months of playing on it. My fretless now is a Zon... long live phenolic/birch fingerboards!
