I have so many of them for so many different things that each one does but overall I can narrow it down to 3 I guess.

1. Tom Kennedy
2. Jimmy Johnson
3. Adam Nitti

Lots of influences but my idol is Chris Squire.

He's the only one that has made me think "I wish I had written THAT bass line".

Amazing how as a young man you see your idols on stage, Gezzer was amazing in 72. Wanted to play bass when i saw him. Lots and lots of great players i have seen live, one of the little disappointments is when you get better and better and start to actualy play as good as the live players, the mystique is gone. You still get great ideas on playing from the players of the day, while others whom you thought were very good are now no better than you! Still fame is all at times,

The thrill is still there though when you hear something special from the past until the present day. Hope you all enjoy your own playing, look forward to hearing you all in time.

Cheers.

This thread is over 3 years old... but good to know... I was amazed at the fact that Taiji was mentioned on the first page.

I think most of you could wager a guess by just looking at my User-Name.

Bassist: Michael Rutherford
Bands: Genesis, Mike + The Mechanics, played on Steve Hackett's "Voyage of the Acolyte"

He really is my idol as cheesy as it sounds. And since not many people know who he is (outside of maybe this website), I figure that having his name as my User Name will get some new people in-to listening to his bass-work. Most people don't realize how good the basslines in Genesis were because they are focused on either Collins or Gabriel's showmanship or on Tony Banks' amazing keyboard work.

But Rutherford was literally the glue that held the band together and made it work. He manages, over and over again, album to album, to compose basslines that incorporate, all at once, the melody, harmony, and rhythm of the song. And he plays some 'flashy' stuff as well, BUT without sacrificing from the melding of melody, harmony, and rhythm.

Favorite Bass Player

My vote is for Gustavo Del Farra

He busks for a living and plays an awesome variation of slap with chords overlayed.

see what I mean for yourselves

I do not idolize anyone.
I really really like this guy.

I agree too dude, Ryan Martinie is an amazing and very underrated bassist

As far as all-time infuence, I'll go with Jaco. But with current bass players, I've got to say my primary influence is Dave LaRue.
