Felder - "I want you back" started it all!

That said Louis Johnson was at his peak on Off the Wall, but Bobby Watson's Rock With You was the coolest bassline ever associated with Michael Jackson.

Worth a mention - guitarist Steve Lukather played bass on "Beat It".

Especially on Thriller and afterwards, very difficult to tell how much bass was played by a human and how much was sequenced synthogarbage.
I always loved the feel of "Rock With You"... and you could hear it was a real bass. So, whoever played that line gets my vote. |

Even if it's not true, that's what I want to believe.

I mean he was hitting all the right notes but the feel wasn't that locked-in. On that clip he was playing a SWEET early 70s sunburst Jazz with all the bling (on the bass not on Tito). And wearing about a 3-foot 'fro. |

He said (in the article that accompanied the transcription in Bass Player years ago) that the chart was writte out, and that as a sax player, he was immediately drawn to the chromatic nature of it. But he's the one who played it with panache and conviction, and the tone of his SCP (a Telecaster with flatwounds) is such a GREAT sound that I strung up my Sting with GHS Precision Flats just to play along with that record. Still my favorite MJ bassist, at least for what they did with Jackson. But Louis Johnson comes close with his contributions on "Thriller" especially "Billy Jean".
Watching the plethora of news reports last night, it's really sad the the media focused so much on MJ's weirdness rather than the music. I guess he is like the Elvis of another generation- he became a paradoy of himself, and the music is just wallpaper to too many folks.

Right, Jermaine always held the bass (first a Gibson EB-3, then a Fender Jazz, not sure if he was still in the Jackson 5 when he got his Alembic). Tito held the guitar, usually a Gibson ES-335.
No idea whether either of them actually played those instruments on Jackson 5 tracks.
=====================
and Louis Johnson gets my vote for the OP's question. Although George Duke and/or Greg Philinganes (sp?) deserve props for some nasty minimoog basslines. |

| I'm dead certain the Jackson boys did not play their instruments on the tracks that made it to the radio. However on the live clip I saw, one of the Jackson boys was almost certainly playing it himself. It might have been "American Bandstand" although the track was definitely live and I thought "American Bandstand" had always only used lip-sync. Maybe that long ago "American Bandstand" was still actually live.
In the same show, from what looked like the same venue, was a live performance of the Four Seasons "1963" and it was really bad. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
