At least that what ive been told by a few people involved with that band. Mike was very doped up and could not play with enough acuracy to do the takes. And Mike Inez was not even in the band when they did Bleed the Freak.
Some controversy on Mike Starr here!!

Krist Novoselic. How can you not love such a big goofy...goof. And who else has the junk to throw a bass way in the air and let it smack him in the forehead on international TV?

For some examples of his playing, you should check out No More Tears by Ozzy from his No More Tears album and Bleed The Freak by AIC.
Inez did not play on Bleed the Freak. That's Mike Starr. Inez joined the group after Starr left during the Dirt tour. Inez has been with them ever since. Starr played on Facelift and Dirt, and their EP Sap.

Is (are) Alice in Chains really grunge?
Blasphemy! of COURSE they are Grunge. Theyre a major part of Grunge.

And just so everyone knows, Grunge is from Seattle. The music is actually just alternative rock... its called Grunge because its from Seattle.

Could you argue that STP is grunge despite them not being from Seattle? sure. But at the end of the day the music is really just alternative rock.

It might be because I can't play his stuff, but I always thought the bass lines in early STP were a little bit overplayed. The guy is really talented, but some of the stuff he's doing doesn't add much to the music, imho.

There's a case to be made that AiC is one of the first "fake" grunge bands. They definitely took on the style and look, but in the late 80s they were a glam band known as Diamond Lie. The press pictures are pretty hilarious.

I love STP and I agree that they probably had one of the best bass players of the bunch (Ament and Shepard were also pretty talented) but come on, PJ put you to sleep and Soundgarden stuff was even worse???

I would say Soundgarden was the best band of that whole Grunge era, musically and lyrically. I was listening to a bunch of those albums recently, reminiscing with the wife (yeah, turning 40 this year!) and Badmotoringer was the only album I could listen to all the way through because it was stylistically and musically interesting from beginning to end and just didn't sound dated.

I mean, when Geddy Lee was recording his first solo album, who do you think he hired to be the drummer? Yep, Soundgarden's Matt Cameron.

Also have a fondness for Alice In Chain's Dirt which I thought was a masterpiece but damn that record is dark and depressing!!!

As for PJ, that first album is still amazing in that it sounds like a band that had been together for years and not a debut, but even some of those songs wore on me. Still, put you to sleep?

But it doesn't matter, we all know THE MELVINS are the greatest!!! All hail King Buzzo and Dale Crover!

Oh and let's not confuse "Nirvana had some great songs" with :Nirvana were a great band and Novoselic was a good bassist", lol.

#1: Kobain had stage presence and a great voice
#2: Kobain wrote some catchy tunes/melodies
#3: Grohl was a kick ass drummer

Kobain was not a great or even very good guitarrist, but perfect for what they did but Novoselic? All he did was play the root note to every chord Kobain played. Anyone could have done that. With an ordinary drummer they would have sounded dull (listen to Bleach) but Grohl's really loud and energetic drumming elevated them a bit.

Badmotorfinger is just a great album, their best in my opinion.

Krist has some cool bass parts, I always like playing Lounge Act.

Yeah, he had a few cool bits - I was probably too harsh, I mean i was a huge Nirvana fan back then and they are an important part of rock history. I also loved his tone on Heart Shaped Box.

Just that IMO the other so-called "grunge" bassists' playing stands out a bit more than his but to be fair, they were a little more punk where the other bands tended to be a bit more metal, classic rock, and prog rock and a bass part like on STP's "The Big Empty" would not have fit in a song like "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
