(listen to this amazing, inspiring solo. He utilizes a lot of avant-garde style such as counterpoint, 5 finger technique, and he supposedly taught Gary Willis and Jeff Berlin) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUVpPtBeD2g

There's just no one else. EVERYONE else, even Sting, McCartney, etc. alter the parts to fit live. Jack relentlessly approaches each song with fearless improvisational flair for BOTH the vocal and bass part every time. It's like he's got two brains in one body- one brain dedicated solely to singing, another solely to playing the bass. Never makes either part mechanical in any way in order to execute the other.
John

| | | | I just listened to the soul cages album. Since doing so, I'd say sting.
Such good playing, such good songs, such a good album!

-Phil Lynott | I have watched that video over 100 times and I still love it.Brings me back to when I first wanted to play bass. Even if he only inspired 3 people to pick up a bass, doesn't it make it all worth it. Not to mention the tens of thousands of people he draws to shows. Rush ,Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes and Thin Lizzy are some of my favorites also. |

I will say, he was the spark that got me playing bass.
It was amazing standing a mere 10 feet away at an outdoor, summer of love festival
watching Jack and the Jefferson Airplane perform almost the entire 'After Bathing at Baxter's' album nearly 40 years ago.
BTW, that album is still fresh and their best work. |

I'll probably think of somebody else later. Victor is not an amazing singer but he does both at the same time really well.
